Laptop wont turn off properly...

My mums laptop is having some strange problem with turning off. when you turn it off nothing happens, and if you try and open a program an error message pops up saying there is a dll error. After 5-10mins it will eventually turn off. Any ideas? Using Win Xp

Hold the power button for about 10 seconds, thatll get it off.

Theres probably a process which isnt shutting down properly, watch task manager as its shutting down and see if you spot anything.
