LapTop wont update any Linux software?

Right, the Laptop is a Packard Bell E3242

I have had a number of various distros on it as of late, and I can come across an issue that seems to have done the same on them all no matter what?

I just cannot upgrade it once its in???

I have done SuSE, Mandriva, CentOS, and right now its running Kubuntu 8.4 and they all seemed to install and run flawlessly ( Centos needed coaxing with the S3 Graphics )

AS I said, they all seem to install just fine, but once they're in, thats it! - I cannot update or upgrade any of the software, either from the CD or the internet?

Really annoying especially when the whole setup is running perfectly except for that one issue and then for that one issue to happen on all the distros that I try, there must surely be a reason behind it???

Do you have a WAN connection? you can browse websites etc?

Are you checking the repos links to make sure they are still working?

What errors do you get?

You haven't provided much information really...

Kubuntu uses apt-get/synaptic from what i remember ,they must have logs

As an after thought you are trying to update it as root (or sudo on *buntus)

Sorry, I know its not much to go on... Appologies.

Ok, Im not a total dork when it comes to Linux, I know how to update my software.

I do it just fine on the Desktop, bu tthe LapTop just wont do it at all.

Its doing the same no matter whether I try to update from the CD or from the internet. It tells me nothing other than it has failed to update... No obvious error messages so, sure, I will dig out any error messages necessary.

I am however, new to ubuntu, or in my case, Kubuntu so any particular info you need, let me know.

Root.
Well, yes, but when I start the installer, it asks for the root password anyway, so, I have to be in root or I wont get into it.

When using the Mandriva one, I can update and do anything as normal as I should be able to on my Desktop, but on this, its just simply unable to?

WAN / LAN
I do have an Ethernet port, and I get the same on there. I am at thistime using a PCMCIA card, but again, this will have nothign to do with it, as I am completely unable to even add any software from the CD or DVD either?... I can remove, but not add?

Ok, I will try to do soemthing now...

Ok, I am removing the Bluetooth junk...Done that ok. It also took some other Bluetooth stuff with it, thats fine, and to be expected.

I will try to re-add it again... Nope, I cannot even select it now?

I quit the installer and re-run it...

Nope, the box to tick is there, I can highlight the whole package to get the info etc but I cannot tick the box to install it.

Ok, lets try to update the sources on the net then...

I click on EDIT SOFTWARE SOURCES and no matter what I do here, I always get *** same box coming up telling me that the information is out of date and that I need to reload the information, so, I click on RELOAD and then get a warnign telling me that the packaging system is being used by another process, possibly apedpt or apt-get but thats obvious cos Im using adept and its calling it...

Anyway, I try to get the app to resolve it and I get a message tellign me that there was an error...

I have of course tried a number of different ways to do things here, but nothing has managed to get it done. I have taken that very CD to a Desktop PC and it works fine on the desktop and updates just fine, but not the LapTop.

This is the same with other Distros too, so why is it, that I can do what I need to do on a Desktop, but not on the LapTop?

Ignore me ignore me...

I just clicked ( In my head, not the mouse button ) that Im not SUDOing the Link...

I did taht on the Desktop as a matter of course, but I have been so up my rear with this LapTop that I simply plainly forgot to do it...

Its done now and its installing a load of software... only snag is that its downloading 334MB over a Wireless connection thats best described at Prehistoric, but its doing it at least.

So, you are right with your afterthought.... As Im not really all that "UP" on the buntu's myself it mustc have slipped by me, but why then was I unable to do it on the others, not only ubuntus?

Thats eating me a little but right now, I have finally got a Linux on my LapTop thats running nicely so Im not willing to risk that just to find out.
