what kind of laptop specs would be able to run things like the sims 3 on average settings?

Minimal system requirements: The Sims 3
Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (PC)
• CPU: Pentium 4 2.0 GHz / Athlon XP 2000+
• RAM: 1 GiByte
• Graphics card: Geforce FX 5900 / Radeon 9500
• VRAM: 128 MiByte
Windows Vista with service Pack 1 (PC)
• CPU: Pentium 4 2.4 GHz / Athlon 2400+
• RAM: 1.5 GiByte
• Graphics card: Geforce FX 5900 / Radeon 9500
• VRAM: 128 MiByte
Laptop requirements

• RAM: 1.5 GiByte (XP) / 2 GiByte (Vista)

But in our opinion you will need a much faster PC to play The Sims 3 at smooth framerates when you activate maximal details. We experienced that single-core CPUs are overburdened if all graphical details are activated. A fast dual-core processor is necessary. The graphics card isn't really challenged: Most of the time even a Geforec 8800 GT is enough to deliver good fps rates.
