hi guys.

so here is my problem. i have to go off on a business trip on thursday. i need to get a laptop and i need to be online with a high speed connection while on the move (trains etc).

is there anyway i can set this up at such short notice? if so, how? and how much will it cost me? also any recomendations on laptops. i know there are lots out there, so i dont want to pick the wrong one.

thanks in advance

Well firstly you'll have to buy from a shop, then ask the train company how you can connect. Most laptops are ready for wireless internet straight out of the box I think.

If the train doesn't support wireless, not sure which ones do and whether you have to be in first class etc. while not the fastest method you may need a GRPS and/or 3G card which would slot into the PC Card (PCMCIA) slot on your notebook.

You can get these cards from most network operators although I'm not sure whether you'll be up and running in time.

My company uses Vodafone and I got my GPRS card the next day and once configured was up and running shortly afterwards. If your company has an account with an mobile operator maybe they can get something sorted quickly for you. You may be able to get something sorted yourself though but you would need to make your own enquires and possibly not get those nice company discounts.

Be aware that GPRS/3G can be expensive as you pay by the amount of data transmitted so check your tariff. My CEO travels a lot and in 1 month his bill was over £1000. They moved him to a much better tariff after that! You'll be surprised how much data you transmit.

My current card only supports GPRS so can't comment on 3G (which drops to GPRS outside 3G coverage areas) but the speed isn't anything special but the connection to the internet / my company is very useful.

Sparky :)
