What's the best processor to go for ? Got around 450-550 to spend and could do with one. Won't be used for games, just general use ... web/mail/music... bigger the HDD and speedy response times would be best.
Pentium "Centrino" 1.7ghz will be more than suitable. You should be able to get a 1GB RAM, 100GB machine for that price. Don't need dual core for your use, so look around for older models that are on sale.
