Large Hadron Collider

The LHC is and will be a great tool for science.

In the 1950s there was so much optimism, science was going to change our world and scientists were the godlike bringers of our new technology. Now scientists are mocked and you can easily find an average person on the street who claims that scientists are wrong, take global warming, the LHC and nuclear power for example. That's all quite sad really. Science seems to be tied down and neutered by public opinion, money and moral arguments.

I REALLY hope the LHC will change many people's negative view of science, I don't hold much hope though as humanity is fickle.

An example of what may happen:

edit: Just want to say that I also have great hope for the LHC, and believe that it will be a great leap for the world. It's already changed the world once with the internet, and it was only being built then. Think of what it can do now.

well it'll be the last of it's kind to built on this planet, whether it works or not (I hope it does).
The next machine, to see if string theory is correct would have to be the size of our Galaxy :o

Hell there is the faintest of faintest possibilities that this one might show us string, that would be something!!

A black hole can't propagate at the Speed of Light as it is not a measure of time and it can't travel at the speed of light as a black hole has mass.

A pedant and a geek, yay me!

It will propagate at the speed of light, this isn't saying it will displace at the speed of light, just its gravitational influence will propagate at the speed of light. So if a black hole formed, you wouldnt feel it until the time it takes for a photon to reach you from it.

There's lots of people saying oh we're all gonna die on the 10th, but I heard they're not even colliding until october. Too many conclusions being jumped to.

We've all watched it.. so nerr :p

If it goes pear shaped will we know about it or will it be pretty instaneous?

I have just got visions of a bunch of scientist looking worried think this wasn't such a great idea after all.

one of the 10,000 scientists was on 'this morning' show today, he said it will not create a black hole, and even if it does,it will be small and nothing will come of it

?

Yeh, they're all saying that. They reckon if the LHC creates a black hole it will disappear in less than a second. They also say that nature creates little black holes all the time and none of them have destroyed the world yet.
