I need a vehicle to move stuff around in, an estate will be too small so I'm looking at an MPV (preferabliy) or a van. My budget is small at less than £1000.

I'm all ears, suggestions within 60 miles of Cambridge are given priority.

Why do you think an MPV will have a bigger load bay than a good Estate?

I'd be looking at an Omega Estate. I bet it's bigger inside than any £1k MPV. That and the fact £1k vans and MPV's tend to be truely nasty things which are much at the end of a hard life.

our zafira b is used and abused as a van, it's like a small transit van with all the seats folded up, it'll be a sad day when it goes even if it's a pain.

your budget could see a zafira a which in my opinion put together better than the b

Omegas are awesome indeed, but if you dont need it to also be a nice enough car then you can probably get a bigger wreck of a van for the same money. I wouldn't look at MPVs unless you specifically need to seat 7 humans - get either an estate or a van.

I'm sure last time I did it, it was only 70 quid or so to rent a full size transit for a weekend, but dont quote me. So depending on how many weekends you're talking about, that might be an option.

Medium term really, how much are we talking for renting a van these days? It's only going to be used at the weekends.

I rented a Ford Transit sized van (though it was a Fiat something or other IIRC) for £35 over night. Picked it up around half 8 am and dropped it off 9am the next day. Just to help with costings.

volvo 940 assuming your not worried about age etc.

HUGE load space with the seats down. I've helped lots of colleagues move stuff with mine :)

Van rental could well be an option - if a SWB transit would do you might even get away with a lwb connect? Would be a bit cheaper but depends if it's proper capacity or van-like shape you need I guess

I need a car with an opening of around a meter high so I think any estate will be out the question.

Hmmm, what to do.

Buy a cheap and nasty tranny for £5/600 bank the rest for whatever breaks

Christ I bought a merc sprinter with tax and ticket for £150 2 years ago ran it for 3 month and weighed it in for £175

Smaller MPVs are going to be series 1 or 2 Scenics or the Picasso. With the seats down they are as big as a small van inside and the loading space and shape is much easier than any estate and they are a lot taller inside. The Picasso is a truly miserable place to be though, according to the two people I know who have had them. We had a Scenic 1 and it was comfortable and very economical. Go for the 2 litre and avoid the Scenic 2 which was apparently built out of Brie. Don't get an auto.

Next size up is the Zafira. Her folks had a diesel one. Truly sounded like a diesel and got shocking mpg returnZ but it was a proper workhorse. They abused it for years and it just took it. One day all the warning lights started coming on and they decided to replace it as the main vehicle but keep it until it died. It didn't and they've still got it, unwashed, unserviced for about 3 years now and it's still soldiering on.

Next size up is going to be the Espace. This is quite a bit bigger than the Scenic and any mid-late-90's survivor from when Renault actually screwed their cars together properly will, basically, never let you down. It'll seat about 50 people, all the seats come out and it's as big as a Merc Vito in the back.

You'll get any of them for under £1000 :)

There's an Espace for sale locally for £425 with 6 months MOT. It's M reg with the 2.2TD engine and has done 200k miles, do you think that could be a winner? I think that's the sort of size I could use, I just don't want to really drive around in a tank, my issue is that I might as well just get a van if I'm going to drive something as big as an Espace.

Well under £1000 it seems. I paid £310 for an example with 4 months MOT, no tax, a boot that's temperamental, a window that won't open and not much of it's original paint left, oh and it's also had a slight knock on the front drivers side. Apart from that it drives like it's brand new.

It'll keep me happy for a few months movie junk about. I'll get some Hovis tomorrow as I'm sure you guys think I'm just making it up to sound cool.

The guy kept of saying it'd weigh in for £350 (I assume he meant if I wanted to scrap it), that can't be true though no?
