Don't laugh - I STILL love to play an old RTS called Supreme Commander 2 - just cant put it down lol

Now, when there are hundreds of units on screen, the gameplay slows down considerably and I wondered if anyone could tell me whats the best way to improve that.

Its a really old game and I dont thin it uses multi core CPUs effectively - I think its designed to run on single core or duo core so my Ryzen 3700X should have enough cores - its a 3080Ti gfx card and I play at 2560 x 1440 with 16GB DDR Ram.

Whats the best way to find out whats choking the game speed?

Not using any mods, no - cheers for the info - will check that thread out.

Gonna run it with task manager - forgot that even existed lol

Might be worth also disabling hyper threading so the game only runs on an actual core on the chip.
Also if its definatly single threaded overclock a single core and use affinity to force it to run on that core.

Just had a quick game - the CPU was never more than 21% utilised - the RAM was almost fully loaded at peak times, however. Amazing how much of a resource hog a few pages open in the edge browser can be. Shut down browsers and other non-necessary background processees and it ran MUCH better

2560 x 1440

i went 5700 to 5700x3d @ 1440 with a 7800xt and i got little gains and in some cases little loss's due to core speed drop.
Squads went 80fps to 110fps but that was because the game is massively CPU bound running on 2 cores only

the higher res the less X3D helps

EDIT:
Ryzen 3700X
ive just seen this, yes the 5700x3d will unlock a lot of performance from your 3080ti

It will be much better with the 1% lows which is what he seemed to be struggling with even at 1440p.
again yes and no. the higher the res the less X3D helps, this can also apply to the 1% lows, most games at 1440 and 4k are gpu bound not CPU

im not saying dont get one, just dont 100% count on a massive uplift, you could be disappointed
