"THE MILLING masses in Times Square, New York, were given the chance to see one of the world’s largest Windows crashes over the weekend.

The two-storey electronic billboard in the square when belly up, froze and then up came a giant Windows error message.

Adam Gaffin happened to be in the square and snapped a picture of the message for posterity. It can be seen here.

Apparently if you look at the icon on the title bar it seems that the whole thing was caused by a Direct X error."

LOL. I always find it strange that they run such things on Winblows, it seems overkill to me. It is not beyound the realms of man to just write a deticated OS or hack a Unix one just to run a gert big telly.

Just because it's in New York doesn't make it the largest ever....I've got a photo of a whole display blue-screened somewhere, though I'm not sure a) if it's real and b) where it is :)

But yes, omgwindowsisthesuck - they really could just throw up *nix.

Because Windows has the best multimedia support. The choice is kind of a no-brainer really. I'd love to see X-Windows on a nix platform render a screen with that resolution at an acceptable frame rate - no really, I would :p

Maybe I'm lucky, maybe I know what I'm doing, but in all honesty, after 20 years of using MS products, 99.9% of them on Windows, I rarely have any bother with the product or Windows itself.

Shame really, for every PC that crashes and the media swoop on it like a pack of dogs, there's about 20 million others running quite well.

Bah, nothing will ever beat NT4.0 SP2 for Windows cockups - my that was a messy service pack :D

I still know old NT4 admins that absolutely swear blind all even numbered NT4 service packs were dodgy/evil/cursed. Though they let 6a off, because the 'a' makes a difference apparantly :D

I have never yet come across a single video format that I can't play on my Mac, plus it looks better than on Windows; but I take your point. :)

How on earth does the same video look better on a Mac than Windows?!!
