Laser mice on Icemats + mouse software

I just bought a Logitech MX610 having searched for and read a few threads here about laser (LASER for the pedants?) mice working fine on Icemats (I have one, but it is not the black one).

Having got the thing, I can't tell whether I really made the right purchase. I've already had to uninstall the Logitech software to get my forward and back buttons to work in FEAR, and tracking over the mat seems a bit dodgy. So,
  • question A) is there some app that will allow me to set mouse button assignments, sensitivity, etc. that is slightly less bloated than the Logitech stuff, and that will let me use all the buttons in games, and
  • question B) my mouse pointer gets jerky every now and then on the mat - do others with Icemats have this problem? No problems on my desk surface.

my g5 did have a problem to start with until I updated the firmware
I've just read a bunch of things about this but it seems that the g5 is the only one they've fixed with a firmware; advice for other similar mice is just to use a "more compatible pad". Oh well.

Anyone have any suggestions as to the software? I'm sure I could find something but I'd like it to come with trustworthy recommendations ...

Growling - does the mouse skip about on the screen? I have a Icemat and find it sometimes that the arrow shoots off the screen!

Im thinking of getting the MX610, but not sure if to use it on the icemat?

cheers
