Laser printer for photos?

I was converted to using a laser printer for all but top quality photo printing a good few years back. As a very occasional printer, I finally got too fed up with inkjet printers being clogged every time I returned to them. And on the rare occasion I needed something to be display quality, I could just get it done at a shop.

I therefore got a Brother HL-3150cdw (which dates the decision! I think it must have been about 2012), and have been really pleased with it for the last 10+ years.

However, it has started to go a bit dodgy, and it occurred to me - surely tech has moved on since 2012. I could get one that's a vast improvement even on what I was already pleased with.

The problem I have come upon though is this - back in 2012, there were loads of 'best buy' type articles out there to give me an idea of what make and model I should pick. But looking for the same now, I'm not seeing anything much out there talking about which laser printer gives the best results printing photos and similar.

So I turn to you guys - any recommendations you can give?

Or have inkjets got loads better at not piddling away all your ink unclogging themselves, so lasers are no longer a reasonable option - and that's why there's no such articles?

I did the same fed up unblocking inkjets.

I bought a brother all in one colour laser. But after a recent firmware decided it won't print blue if black is empty etc. some other stuff stopped working. Switched to 3rd party toners and then a firmware update blocked them. Got replacement toners free update. But last brother printer I'll buy because of the sharp practise with firmwares updates.

I'll probably get rid of it though. It's too big, and fed up having to constantly print emergency stuff for extended family.

I also have a Brother all in one, which is great and 'just works'. I disabled automatic firmware updates because they push these out for one reason and one reason only - to block the use of 3rd party toners. There are no other improvements received via the 'updates'. Never had an issue since I disabled this function.

I guess so as all liquid ink printers will do this to some extent when sat idle for a long period.

If you are not going to use it for weeks at a time then maybe a laser is a better option albeit more costly.

I have a mono laser personally and use Snapfish for photo printing when needed which is few and far between.

From my old IT experience thermal wax printers were the best for photos

Whether that's just changed don't know. I do recall seeing photo printers being sold ages ago. I wonder if they were thermal wax printers
