Laser printer printing problem

Every page I print out on my laser printer has a bit of a speckled light grey background. I've confirmed it's the printer by running the printer's built-in diagnostics. I suspect something is either dirty or worn out (it's an old printer), but I'm not sure which part as I'm not well acquainted with the innards of laser printers.

Consumables (seperate toner cartridge and drum cartridge) are well within their page count but given that they're the original ones that came with the printer, so are also old, it could be those. I don't want to replace them if there's nothing wrong with them though.

Any knowledge of laser printer innards gratefully received. :)

Hey, have you been round my place and not told me? How did you know it was an HL series?

Yes, I've already had the toner cartridge out and yes, toner came out.

It's done over 2500 (out of a rated 3000) pages, so I don't object to replacing it. Am I going to need to replace the drum as well (I do have a spare)?

Oh, and as you're clearly an HL expert, any tips on getting things changed without spreading toner all over the place? :)
