need some help getting a family members PC to fix tomorrow been told the problem but got no idea how to fix it except to reformat it.

when they switch the PC on you get the windows loading screen & then get a error message about the lass.exe & to click ok to terminate. You can click on ok the message goes & all you are left with is a black screen & the mouse arrow.

Its the same when trying to go in to safe mode you only get the mouse arrow. ctrl+alt+del wont bring anything up.

the OS is XP but boot disc's have been lost & i might be able get get a boot disc from a mate if that would help.

I do really need to try & fix the problem as they have photo's on the PC that need saving.

If i do have to reformat what would be the best way to recovery the pictures after wards

Cheers

Well, if the data on the disk is a "must keep" then i'd slave the disk to another PC and take a copy of the whole disk.

Once you're happy you've got their data backed up. Stick the disk back in their PC and run a chkdsk repair using a Windows XP CD ... if lass.exe is playing silly beggars or is corrupt, the repair should fix it

Sounds like ye olde sasser worm. Download/burn/boot from a Linux live CD and copy across all the files you wish to recover onto some removable storage device.

Then you can reformat the computer as it sounds like it hasn't been patched forever and probably has more than one infection.

Thanks for the replies,

they did say the pc has been slow for a while, so was thinking even if I repair the lass.exe, they pc may benefit from a clean install. So the linxu option may be best to try 1st, but iv never used linxu before. Will that just be the same sort of lay out as windows n can take stuff off the hard drive even tho windows is install on it n put it on to a USB stick

cheers

You can boot it from USB but it's a lot of mucking about compared to just shoving it on a CD/DVD and booting off it. If you have a USB drive in when you boot off the Linux disk it'll probably show up inside the Linux GUI and allow you to do a HDD to USB disk copy of files etc.

Dont' worry about using Linux it's very similar to Windows and a nice intuitive interface. I tend to use a Knoppix live CD, but only because I'm a bit of a Linux newbie and it's never let me down :)

If in doubt burn it tonight and boot up your own PC, you won't damage your windows installs as the OS runs entirely from the CD and RAM.
