Hi,

I already have an Asus P5Q and have the following on my cpu/ram shortlist:
OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C5 Dual Channel Vista Gold
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 LGA775 'Wolfdale' 3.00GHz

I will be running 32 bit XP pro for now, and may go to Windows 7 when it's released. Is there any harm in running 4GB in XP 32, other than not seeing the full quota?
Could I get a lesser spec (and cheaper) cpu without seeing too much of a performance hit? I won't be overclocking, I prefer to keep things as quiet and cool as possible.

TIA!

That all looks good to me. I'd still get the 4gb even if your still using XP, as you say you will probably upgrade to windows 7 at some point, so might aswell have the extra ram, espcially at the price it's at.

If you don't plan on overclocking then I'd stick with the E8400, it's still pretty quick at stock speeds. If you were overclocking then you could have saved some money by going for a cheaper CPU and clocking it to faster speeds.

Summat like this?
This Week Only Offer
Corsair 4GB DDR2 XMS2 PC2-6400C5 TwinX (2x2GB)

I have Corsair at the moment - it's been pretty solid at stock speeds. Before that I had a different type of corsair that was the cause of reboots, until I upped the vram. Been slightly wary of them every since!

Don't be so put off by OCZ, they're not as bad as some people think, they do a lot of quality products for a great price. I've got 4GB of OCZ in my quad, see spec :)

Other than that, looks good :)

Yeah, the OCZ isn't as bad as poeple make out, I've got 4gb sitting in a P5Q pro along with a Q6600 and it's working perfect. It's a great buy for the price.

I've just got some OCZ Reaper HPC PC9200 (1150mhz) 4gb for £70.00 , in my Asus P5Q-WS board , running @ 1200mhz.

I'm well happy , infact they seem to run better than my Cellshock PC8000 1000mhz memory, which cost £350.00 for 4gb 2 years ago.
