ive been browsing more and more in here and saw someone mention last.fm, can i personally ty for keeping me sane the last 4 nights of (essay writing) hell. what a great idea. ive signed up for the ocuk room but your a bit emo rocky for me, i love acid jazz, funk, abient, folk and loads of other singer songwriter types of music. dont get me wrong the prodigy and oasis and the foo are are up there too. Last.fm is great loads of bands ive never heard of before and now want to buy there albums!
one question how is it legal? do the record companies get any royalties from it?

just wanted to say thanks for the sanity!

What's there to question the legality of?

Song previews are streaming, and 30 seconds long, and full songs are also streamed and available with permission from the copyright holder i.e. http://www.last.fm/labels/. They also have the relevant broadcasting licences (e.g. MCPS) from what I'm aware, so artists and labels do collect royalties just like any other radio station.

thats all i wondered as its like thousands of really small indipendant radio stations i just wondered how they collated the royalties, but i suppose there is a peice of software that allows then to count amount of air time given to songs.

but as ive said i love this thing really quirky some of the stuff ive been listening to and its great awakening!

It widened my view of music. Just by looking at friends and neighbours and their friends and neighbours, and seeing what they've been listening to has made me listen to music i would never have bought otherwise.

I've signed up tonight to see if it will widen my selection of music as well. At the moment I'm mostly listening to older rock music.

maybe you should resurect the last fm thread and post in there :)
