Last GPU upgrade before new rig

Hi guys,

Basically I need a new gaming GPU for when I'm at university, GTX 285 is showing it's age. I was thinking of the GTX 580 or the 670? Is there any point in me getting a PCI-e 3.0 card? Would I get all the new features if It was just on 2.0?

or would a 570 be a better choice than the 580 for now? because its a lot cheaper.

If anyone could give me any advice that would be great :)

IMHO the best value cards of this generation are:
1.)HD7850 for around £160 to £170 due to overclocking(possible GTX580 level performance)
2.)HD7950 for around £240 to £250 due to overclocking(possible HD7970 or even HD7970 GE level performance)
3.)GTX670 for around £280 to £300 at stock clockspeed(and overclocked)
4.)HD7970 if around £300 at stock clockspeed(and overclocked)

The HD7870 is starting to drop under £200,so perhaps we might see cards at £180 to £190 - the card is around GTX570 to GTX580 level performance IIRC.

Would it be pointless getting a 670 because of PCI-e 3.0? will I be missing any features or just speed? as I have only got 2.0.

I would get a 7850 then if I were you. I don't think you'd see much benefit from anything that higher. If you want to future proof a little more than you can look at a 670.

The rest of your machine could do with looking at too. The CPU is fine for now but you could help by getting an SSD and an additional 4GB of RAM. Your machine will feel a lot snappier this way :).

No. The difference in single card is around 1%. It's only around 5% in SLI (like myself).

I would go lower end gpu (7850? maybe wait a until the 660Ti drops) and then sell and upgrade the gpu again when you upgrade the rest of the rig

I dunno about you but the moment I get a new processor/mem/mobo I feel obligated to get a new GPU just to complete the set ;)

How long you thinking of waiting until the processor/mobo upgrade?

Thanks for info mate, sounds like a 7850 for me then. I prefer nvidia cards personally but looks like it will have to do :)

Yeah I see what your saying, sounds right to me. if I got a new rig would want a good pci-e 3.0 card to go with new system. :D

Until my work placement year at uni which I get paid for and don't have to use the money to pay back student loan. so like 2 years i think?
