Last, this and next week.

Throughout life I've used last Tuesday, for example, as meaning the Tuesday last week. I have however accepted where people have used the expression for Tuesday just gone if it's late in the week. I've had to ask which one they mean though.

It's come up in a discussion at work, that last Tuesday should be used for the last Tuesday whether it was last week or this week and furthermore, this Tuesday means the next one not the Tuesday that occured this week. So if it's Thursday and they say this Tuesday they mean next Tuesday. I don't agree, this Tuesday means this weeks Tuesday to me, even if it's in the past. However I've accepted if people have said this Tuesday coming.

Could we maybe have a poll? or does everyone disagree with me?

Confusing.

When a Tuesday has past last week, I say last weeks Tuesday. And when a Tuesday has passed this week, I say this weeks Tuesday. A Tuesday coming up in the next week I say next weeks Tuesday.

Makes it easy.

And I never realised Tuesday has such a funny spelling.

There's no standard and you need to clarify or if in a company to agree a standard. Ueless words other thn for a casual conversation.

If someone referred to today (Monday, the 30th) as last week on Tuesday the 31st, I'd think they're a bit of an idiot.

I disagree with you, 'this Tuesday', means 'this coming Tuesday', if it is past then it is last Tuesday.

i'd refer to tuesday as tuesday coming
i'd say tuesday passed if it's late in the same week but i'd say last tuesday if it was last week

This is how I normally do it:

Last Tuesday = The last Tuesday that has passed
This Tuesday = The next Tusday to come (if said on or after a weekend)
Next Tuesday = Not "this tuesday" the one after - unless it's before a weekend, then would be the next tuesday to come.

This Tuesday- The Tuesday in the current week
Next Tuesday- The Tuesday in the next week.

Last Tuesday - The Tuesday of the previous Week
Tuesday - The Tuesday to come
Next Tuesday - The Tuesday to come the next week

"Next Tuesday" is the Tuesday that's after the coming weekend and "Last Tuesday" is the Tuesday before the last weekend. If it's a Tuesday inbetween weekends I'll just say Tuesday and I trust whoever I'm talking to to be competent enough to figure out which day I mean by the tense I'm using.

OK, but would you say this week meaning the week after the current one?

Is it though? You don't mention the Tuesday in the current week and you appear to have the last two as the same answer if today is Wednesday.

Last Tuesday = The last Tuesday to pass, be it yesterday or almost a week ago.
This Tuesday/Next Tuesday = the next Tuesday
