Last time a game truly immersed you?

Same. Didn't hate Portal, but it seemed massively over-hyped. Didn't get the Half-Life thing either.

Or Fallout 3 for that matter.

Or The Witcher, but I got bored early in that one. I understand you need to give it some time.

I haven't completed half life 1 or 2 yet!

I intend to force myself to do so at some point, just out of interet because they are such a significant part of pc gaming culture. I obviously didn't find them gripping enough when they came out though.

Vampire the masquerade. Such a seedy world so beautifully brought to life. :D

The opening to Bioshock was........immense, but the rest of the game I found to be boring (what I played of it anyway :o).

Loved ARMA 1. Spent ages playing coop with my brother. Arma II was just to system demanding haha.

I Should have Added that to my list. Great fun game, played it through fairly quickly.

ive not played mafia 2 yet as i decided to wait until i got a better comp, now im due to upgrade is the story as good as mafia 1? this still remains one of my all time fav games.

Mass Effect 2, and before that Mass Effect 1. I didn't go to lectures for a week because of the first one, luckily I have a little more self-control and didn't lose my job over the second, but I was/am well and truly engrossed.

I'd have to say Darkest Hour (Red Orchestra mod) is the most recent, in realism mode which means no hit markers, no kill counter (until you die), and no way to tell if you actually did just snipe that solider in the chest other than the possible blood splat on a wall or the sight of the lifeless body slumping down.

Altho it's multiplayer and there is no story to get immersed in as such, last night I felt like I was actually a sniper in WW2, sat in the top floor of a house for a good 30 minutes, staring across a large snowy field dotted with fences and a tree line at the back, clutching my bolt action Springfield rifle, good pair of headphones on with the volume turned up.

I then proceeded to decimate the German assault (along with the deployed 30cal machine guns and riflemen just in front of me on our front line), firing my 5 shots with precision and then popping behind the wall to reload, and by the time I had died I had taken 38 people with me.

It's been a while since a game has had its hooks in me so deep that I would dream about it while I slept. Maybe I'm getting older and my tastes are changing or games just aren't the same any more. When Counter Strike: Source was released along with Half Life 2 I was in 4th year of secondary school, I literally couldn't concentrate on anything happening around me because all I could think about was Counter Strike. I lost a full year and a bit to this game, nearly failed all my exams simply because I was playing CS instead of studying. I guess some people could look upon this as an addiction and I would agree with them, I was addicted.

Now that I'm older I can play a game and manage my time with it. Gone are the days of spending 13-14 hours in one sitting.

Hmm, X-Wing, Tie Fighter, Day of the tentacle, Half Life 1, Crysis (I know, but I kinda liked all the eye candy) ...nothing recently

Previous poster...I remember Ecstatica, I bought it as I recall and was shocked by the monkey punching seven bells out of you, it was like the city center on a Friday night levels of violence

High five! Spent so so so so long on that game.

Games

More recently - Minecraft, Demon Souls (PS3), Two Worlds Epic Edition (steam) and Portal 2

Retro - Morrowind, Counter Strike (not source), Sensible World of Soccer (1200 Amiga) and 1080 (n64)

This weekend I have purchased the Quakecon pack, Terraira and Dungeons of Dredmor on Steam so hopefully something there will grip me - I've only tried Return to Castle Wolfenstein so far and it plays really well on my laptop which is a bonus (9600M GS Card).

Most recent game that i truely felt immersed in was STALKER SoC.
the atmosphere and grittyness of the game just appealed to me and drew me into it, really like that game, infact its the only game in recent years thats held my attention enough to play through numerous times unmodded, modded etc
last game to have the effect on me was Morrowind.

to some extent i also found a few other games in recent times, Borderlands, Red Dead Redemption(console:p), but not quite to the extent of the games above.
