So I've been playing on xbox live for a long time, Halo mainly... However as of late I have been noticing a lot of what seem to be latency related issues.

Halo always seemed fine, there weren't too many occasions when I thought lag was a problem, however lately I have been playing Bad Company and MW2 but have been tearing my eyeballs out at the sheer madness of what seems to be lag, when I unload an entire clip into someone for them not to die, and it's sometimes hard to hit someone who is moving.

Rant over, anyone got any tips or tests I can do to optimize my connection for xbl?

MW2 is bad for lag,
Im on a rubbish AT&T connection out in the US right now, im playing with my mates back in the UK and 9 times out of 10 I end up hosting the game, 1meg down 256 up.
How i know the other guys have much much better connections but im in the US of A so i guess i must host the game right?

Im on 50 Meg cable, and when i'm not hosting the latency is terrible in COD6. It is so poorly optimised its a joke.

There is no much/nothing you can do other than opening the ports on you router so you have open NAT, this wont reduce latency though.

I am on strict nat takes me ages to find a game and I am suffering in game, always end up dead, I have pumped rounds into people only for them to take me out.

My nat says open but struggle to find a game sometimes or when in a group with friends when I click find game we all get split up,

I agree they have over complicated the game search this time round, never had any problems in Call of Duty 4 or WaW.

Check your pings to the BBC website and see what you get, it could be you're on a **** connection to your ISP. It can just happen over night and it has happened to me many times over the past 5 years. I think I have never stayed with one ISP for longer then 12 months because they always go down the bog sooner or later.

Open a Command Prompt window and type "ping www.bbc.co.uk -n 15" (without the quotes obviously) and post your results here.

I have no doubts about my connection (O2 LLU) as its always solid:

Code:
Pinging bbc.co.uk [212.58.224.138] with 32 bytes of data:

    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),

Might be worth a shot for other people though.

It's just a way to rule out the ISP for these sorts of things, people are always quick to blame the game or Xbox Live without first checking their own connection to their ISP.

ISP's also sometimes do maintenance (both planned and unplanned outages), which can go on for days without them saying a word, which makes your ping shoot right up (which is what happened to me a few weeks ago where it shot up from 15-16ms up to 80-100ms. This of course made MP unplayable for the whole weekend. Most of the decent ISP's will let you know if there is a problem, but a lot of the mass market ones such as BT, Talk Talk etc (we all know who they are :p) won't bother saying a word.

Another way to lower your ping is to check with your ISP to see if interleaving is on because this is often switched on by default with many ISP's and sometimes isn't needed if your line is quite stable. It is needed on mine, but I would rather have the lower pings with a few disconnections a day so I have it switched off even though it would make my line more stable. If it is on you can always try asking them if they would switch it off and see how it goes, if it makes your line unstable just ask them to put it back to how it was.

I've put my X360 into the dmz and have no problems with latency or matchmaking on MW2. Infact I find games pretty much instantly. Also I find a lot of the time I'm hosting (on 20mb Virgin) and no one has ever mentioned its laggy on the 18 player matches.

:)

Most people suffer latency due to their ISP tbh...

I'm having a nightmare with my isp at the moment, Had been with BT for around 4 months, and recently had a phone call from talk talk, offering me a new line and broadband for even cheaper. So had a quick chat with them as was going to go for it as long as I didnt end up with loads of charges from BT.

Found out 2 days later BT were going to want a couple of 100 quid off me, and decided against the whole thing, so phoned talk talk and cancelled it. Talk Talk still decide to send me out a router and all the start up information, so give them another call to make sure its all been cancelled, but alas they decided to go ahead with the whole thing, broadband was all changed over yesterday!

Now i'm in the process of talking to BT and Talk Talk to get this sorted, but no joy so far. Talk Talk has been rubbish so far, poor download speeds, Xbox live suffering like mad, and torrents are being throttled so much...

Would rather be back to BT, Had no problems with gaming online with them at all.

With MW2 I find that lag is no problem at all for the vast majority of the time then on the odd occasion it goes very belly up in a way that WaW never did. At times I find myself just trying to zig zag and bounce my way to cover and wait for the inevitable "switching hosts" to start.

How can you tell if you are the one hosting the game?

When the map loads and just before the round starts usually on the score board everyone bar the host has really bad connection. I have been having issues with lag/hit detection issues recently. A right royal pain in the rear, get the 1st few shots off, get the little marker up center screen to say you have hit them and still end up dying with 1/2 shots from the other guy.

That's not a very good ping, I get 11-12 MS to bbc news on my ADSL24 (C&W) connection.

And welcome to P2P gaming, where pings are always inconsistent.

I get 17ms pinging bbc.co.uk on my Virgin 20meg cable connection, usually better than that though to be honest. MW2 is rather inconsistent but for me it's usually not too disruptive. Who is your ISP?

30ms is a perfectly good ping to a UK based website. Much lower, on an ADSL2+ connection, is usually obtained by having error connection turned off. It is quite plausible you have it turned off and he has it turned on, or he is on ADSL(1) which normally has it turned off, by default.
