I have a disciplinary at work because i have been late a lot of times on the early shift  The new supervisor is a real dick and now he is on my case about lateness, we had four tube strikes and load of snow end of last year and i did not call in sick once. I often work through my lunches. Do you think that i have any chance of talking my way out of this one? Below are the times in minutes that i was late on the early shift.

06/09/2010 15

I would say 70% of the lateness is due to the pathetic unreliable public transport in london, but like everyone, i over sleep and forget to set my alarm sometimes. Anyone else have this problem?

All i can suggest is getting a job with company with a sliding doors approach to time. I.e If you come in later, you stay later, you come in earlier, you go earlier.

That is the thing it is only on the early shift, from 8am to 4:30pm that i am ever late. I work at a place that contracts out the IT department to the company I work for. I am the first one in, in the mornings at 8am, so to be honest i thought no one knew and that it had a more relaxed attitude to being late. But one day i was late 1 hour because of waking up late and then they checked the cards and saw my lateness and on the 1 december they called me in for an informal meeting. They said that it was unacceptable and that i must be on time etc. then i was late a few days ago due to not setting my alarm and that is why i have disciplinary.

But those weeks in september were especially bad on the public transport due to strikes.

I always said that i am not paid enough to come in 30 mins early. That would mean that they are getting my time for free and they won't be complaining if i am come in at 7:30am every morning. I always catch the train that gets me there like 7:50 or so and then if it runs late or whatever that is when i am 20mins late. etc.

I work for solicitors and they charge ridiculous amounts per hour and even charge for photocopies, so i thought in order to get respect you have to take your time seriously.

But my lateness is not premeditated, i am not trying to take the ****, i genuinely want to get in on time. crap happens too much i guess...needs to re-evaluate my attitude towards time keeping and also try to leave 15 mins at least. /thread

I work 17 miles away from my job and i can go from work to home in 50 mins, some days, especially the end of last year, on some days it took 1 hour 30mins or even up to 2 hours on some days. Am i expected to arrive 1 hour before I start.

It is a very relaxed environment at work and I was never told that there was specifically a zero tolerance to lateness.

After examining this list they gave me it is full with errors, i don't work weekends and there is a duplicate and as someone pointed out the time was 8 hours not 15, could be a straw man though.

06/09/2010 15 (tube strikes)
07/09/2010 26 (this week was bad transport)
08/09/2010 28
09/09/2010 26
10/09/2010 36

20/09/2010 22 (duplicate, different time))
21/09/2010 38

22/10/2010 20

03/11/2010 32 (tube strikes)
16/11/2010 19
17/11/2010 39
18/11/2010 21
29/11/2010 57 (tube strikes)
30/11/2010 61 (tube strikes)

(440 mins) 7 hours

removed duplicates and weekends and calculated the time correctly, it is still bad but not as bad...

Going to look for another job though, because i just don't like working in the environment where you are on written warnings with ultimatums like "you are late once more and you have another warning" i just can't take that stress, so ill be moving on.

What about the times in red I have highlighted, why were you late?

Do you think another employer is going to be more lenient with your shocking timekeeping?

I will have to come in 30 mins early. Which means i will have to wake up at 5:30, catch the 6:30 train. compared to waking up at 6 and catching the 7am train. That way when the trains are delayed i will not be as late. I will say this to them, but will still look for another job.

I can understand being late where something outside of your control such as a bus breakdown, bus being late, tube strikes, snow etc. But in the case where you've stated a reason the following 2 to 3 days you've continued to be late by almost exactly the same amount of time. Did you not think 'I was late today, I should get up earlier tomorrow so it doesn't happen again'?

That is because the trains were continuously bad after the tube strikes i left 30mins earlier but was delayed for 1 hour etc.

So the next day i was not going to go in an hour earlier, so i just said "f it" and went in at the same time as usual and that is why i was late. I guess now because of that attitude, i am going to have to come in 30 mins early everyday and to people that think you can come in to work and read a book, that is a joke. You come in early and you will be expected to work, not like i can tell people, i don't start till 8am come back then. I am not going to sit at starbucks every morning for 30 mins. But not much i can do now, the supervisor has it in for me because i moan at him because his job is pointless and he does not know what he is doing, so this is his way of getting back at me. The client is not moaning and the last guy left because the company was full of bs. They are not exactly the best company to work for.

I warned them when i started the job that i have problems getting up so early because i stay up so late. I also drink too much during the week so then i can't wake up :/

I said i would rather do the late shift only, but the guy i worked with likes changing lates and earlies every week, so the change from lates to earlies i also struggle with.

But yea, not making excuses, just saying. I will come in 30 mins earlier but they won't care, they would have me coming in 1 hour earlier, working through my lunch and an hour afterwards and they wouldn't even care or give any thanks etc. So that is why i try to come in exactly on time, because there is no reward for coming in early etc.

But i have to keep my job and i hate the stress of disciplinaries and all that sort of thing, so i no choice but to come in early, so hopefully that will get them off my back.

I live in romford so there is one over ground then change at stratford on to central line, so at least once a week usually more there is atleast 15 mins delays on either trains. some weeks last year, every day for a few weeks we had delays.

You really have issues.

Many people drink during the week (i dont have an issue with it) and many people struggle to get up in the morning. Just been a bad combination of delayed trains and me not leaving enough lee way time and me over sleeping occasionally due to me going to sleep to late.

I value you my time outside of work and I would rather stay up an extra hour than sit at starbucks in the morning

But i know it is my fault and i can't blame anyoen else, will try to sort my time keeping out. thanks for input.

I am actually a very dedicated and hard working employee and the client is very impressed with my performance.

just time keeping issue as explained in great detail. Don't need your degenerate comments thanks and you can remove that sig now.
