Lateness at work

I work shifts and theres nothing worst than waiting for your replacement after a long shift when they are late. You must have been a popular guy there.

I warned them when i started the job that i have problems getting up so early because i stay up so late. I also drink too much during the week so then i can't wake up :/

I said i would rather do the late shift only, but the guy i worked with likes changing lates and earlies every week, so the change from lates to earlies i also struggle with.

But yea, not making excuses, just saying. I will come in 30 mins earlier but they won't care, they would have me coming in 1 hour earlier, working through my lunch and an hour afterwards and they wouldn't even care or give any thanks etc. So that is why i try to come in exactly on time, because there is no reward for coming in early etc.

But i have to keep my job and i hate the stress of disciplinaries and all that sort of thing, so i no choice but to come in early, so hopefully that will get them off my back.

I live in romford so there is one over ground then change at stratford on to central line, so at least once a week usually more there is atleast 15 mins delays on either trains. some weeks last year, every day for a few weeks we had delays.

You're the other end of the scale to Groen. Commonly referred to as a "sucker" or "doormat".

I wholeheartedly disagree. I don't consider myself to be sucker. I have just always done what I needed to do to get to where I wanted.

Are you really earning 100k?

Yes

If you are that's a different matter and you're obviously in a senior management even maybe CEO type role - if so I'm suprised you actually have contracted hours.

It's a contracted minimum.

Hmm interesting thread. It actually made me think about how late I am on practically a daily basis, even if i get on my earliest train I am 2 to 5 mins late and never get into the office before 9 am. However this is massively offset against working lunches at my desk and allowing the guys to call me at practically any hour of any day including weekends. On top of that if the **** hits the fan they know I will do whatever it takes to get there and do whats needed until its done. Casing point a few years back when I flew back from holiday early to do a recovery job after all of a clients kit failed, this saw me sleeping in their offices for an entire weekend.

I guess it depends on the company, your attitude towards work and any agreements you have with the guys there as to what is acceptable or not. In my case I am often a few mins late (20 mins this morning as I lost my season ticket :( ) but make up for it in many other areas. My employer accepts this and has never pulled me up on my time keeping.

ok, now I know you're taking the urine. So not only are you a late riser, which is entirely your fault from staying up so late you also have a drink problem? Sort yourself out man, no one else is going to do it for you!

That's different from "my contracted hours are 8-5".

I suppose... Perhaps it was worded poorly.

But then there are plenty in my position who do just that. In my role it's the results that count rather than the effort put in. It just often takes a lot of effort to excel, hence putting more hours in.

Regardless, we are going way off point here...

I have minimum hours of 40hrs per week. I seldom do 40hrs a week (a lot more usually). I do it because I have a sense of duty, and also because the work needs to be done, and despite moaning about it I do quite enjoy my work. Admittedly, some weeks, although rare, I do have lighter weeks and perhaps don't even hit my 40hrs a week, though I do dial in from work and catch up on bits and pieces.

I don't consider myself a sucker - I just have a good work ethic (in my mind anyway).

You really have issues.

Sounds like you've got more problems than just work. I'd see someone about it.

Is it Tesco you work for Gordy? Tbh I'd expect that no store manager (assuming this is what you are, going by other posts) does 39/40 hours a week.. (except mine, lazy swine..) but there's surely got to be a limit as to what you do? My old store manager and I, as his deputy, did 60-70 hour weeks and I was on £14k/yr salaried. Worked out a pretty crap wage for such a responsible role!

I agree with most people that you should try and sort yourself out a bit.

I mean, it's not that hard to go to bed at a reasonable hour, im the same, i go to bed about 10ish but dont really feel tired then but I usually end up playing a game on my phone or put music on for a little bit and that sends me off and getting up around 7 isnt that bad.

Also I can feel your pain using the Romford train line, it has to be the worst line in the country by miles. My brother had loads of issues with them making him late for work, so in the end he used to get a Bus to Upminster and get on the much much more reliable C2C service.

But that does come with a price increase and also waking up quite a bit earlier, but it must have helped him with his job and made his superiors happier.

Sometimes you gave to sacrifice a bit of sleep and time to get ahead in this world

Is it Tesco you work for Gordy?

Yes mate. I'm a Cat 7 'superstore' manager.

£14k salaried as a deputy manager? My deputy earns £45k Are you in an express store by any chance. Even the work level 1 line managers in my store earn at least £25k

You're right, the majority put in at least an extra hour per day. 8-6 seems to be about the norm. When I was a deputy my Store manager used to only do 8-5 however and there are plenty on my region who put in nothing extra. Though admittedly these tend to be the older guys who don't really want to progress any further.

Groen you have issues "man" you do know it's a sackable offence to be drunk at work, this is becuase H&S risks involved. it's not our position to tell you how to go with your life, but the chance of you keeping your job is very "unlikely" So in reality the transport isn't late it's more of the case that you drink to much, miss the train to get you in on time and be late. Seriously you claim you want to keep your job, but from what your saying your not doing anything about it.

So they offer you a job and you warn them that you have issues getting up early and that in a nutshell your an alcoholic too??....and yet they still gave you a job, they must have been absolutely desperate to take you on :/.

If i was your potential employer and you said that to me, id have told you to **** off in no uncertain terms.

Methinks your talking absolute crap like you normally do...have to say you do a fine job of trolling these forums.

groen - What exactly is it you do for a living? It may help us put your completely nonchalant attitude into a better perspective.
