Lateness at work

That is the thing it is only on the early shift, from 8am to 4:30pm that i am ever late. I work at a place that contracts out the IT department to the company I work for. I am the first one in, in the mornings at 8am, so to be honest i thought no one knew and that it had a more relaxed attitude to being late. But one day i was late 1 hour because of waking up late and then they checked the cards and saw my lateness and on the 1 december they called me in for an informal meeting. They said that it was unacceptable and that i must be on time etc. then i was late a few days ago due to not setting my alarm and that is why i have disciplinary.

But those weeks in september were especially bad on the public transport due to strikes.

I always said that i am not paid enough to come in 30 mins early. That would mean that they are getting my time for free and they won't be complaining if i am come in at 7:30am every morning. I always catch the train that gets me there like 7:50 or so and then if it runs late or whatever that is when i am 20mins late. etc.

8am isn't an early shift, are you for real?

But herein lies the problem. You aren't prepared to get in early to prevent yourself coming in late. But you think your employer should pick up the tab. Employers are always open to a bit of flexibility but when it is looked upon that you are abusing the system, deliberately or not, they are left with no option but to crack down.

If they don't operate flexi-time then it is your responsibility to be in on time. Period...

8:00am is an early shift  As for the timing issue - you do realize everybody who uses public transport has this issue, right? I actually used to like getting there slightly earlier and then sitting in Starbucks reading the paper and having a coffee before work.

I would have sacked you long ago and given the job to one of the 1000's of people would would actually want the job.

Crazy. There is never any excuse for regular lateness. Once in a blue moon is fine **** happens.

I've been late twice already this week. Monday morning got stuck in a traffic jam due to 4 car pile up on M1, today got stuck again on M1 due to a lorry squashing another car. Late to work 1hr each time.

Brilliant. A jobsworth as well.

8am is an insult to those who work an early shift! My Wife starts work at 7:30am and doesn't even call that an early!

You Sir need to re-evaluate your attitude toward your employer. If someone has the common decency to employ you, turning up on time for work is the absolute minimum you should give them in return. I have worked for the same company for 5 years. In that time I have forgotten to set my alarm twice. Both times I paid and got a taxi to ensure that I made it into work on time! I also make sure that I arrive at my place of work no less than 15 minutes early each day in order for me to make a cuppa and use the toilet before my shift.

If you know there is industrial action or bad weather on the way, you make damn sure you are prepared. This winter due to the snow I set out for work on foot 1 hour earlier than normal to ensure i got in on time, I normally cycle but had to walk the 3 miles to ensure my safety. In return for my dedication I was allowed to go home early on two occasions to ensure I got home at the normal time. This is called mutual respect between employer and employee. What you appear to be lacking is respect.

Wouldn't have made it to christmas where I work. 3x late more than 5 minutes within a month gets you a verbal warning/invitation to talk to manager if theres an issue, couple more lates and disciplinary.

What a joke. I am late by 5 minutes because I pick up a delivery on my way to work. I do 20 mins to 1 hour unpaid overtime every evening. I don't mind as it's part of my job and so far even though we have to clock in and out my company is understanding. 5 to 20 mins fair enough maybe take a shorter break everyday?? You sound like you want it all though! Lucky to still have a job.

Early shift is relative, we have an 8am (early shift) and 12pm (late shift) where I work.

I'm fortunate tho my dept is on flexitime (well sort of fortunate, not so fun if you get called in on a Sunday).

I work for solicitors and they charge ridiculous amounts per hour and even charge for photocopies, so i thought in order to get respect you have to take your time seriously.

But my lateness is not premeditated, i am not trying to take the ****, i genuinely want to get in on time. crap happens too much i guess...needs to re-evaluate my attitude towards time keeping and also try to leave 15 mins at least. /thread
