Lateness at work

I'm late about the same tbh, but then my managers know I sometimes need to drop my boy to school which means definite lateness and I make up for it anyway.

Works both ways if you are not in a time critical role :)

In my 4 years working where I am now don't think I've been late even once, I'm always 10-15mins early since I start at 6am so getting to town quicker = better parking space :)

Its not the transport thats unreliable...

I had this problem with a member of my team and he blamed everything except himself for arriving to work late.

As for the supervisor being a dick, hes just doing his job and its not a nice experience having to discipline someone whos supposed to be an adult. Its even worse having to sit someone down and tell them they have lost their job.

all right thanks for the insight, advice taken on board.

Is it really? I doubt it.

I would have given you the sack if I was your boss. What you need to realise is that external factors such as who earns what, who does what is none of your business. You are paid to do a specific job which you have failed to do.

Your boss is a dick because you're immature, you need to grow-up.

Now that's an early shift :)

Used to start work at half-four back when I milked cows, if I was late the cows would reward me by being extra free with their poop.

They are creatures of habit and don't like their routine being changed. I made sure I wasn't late too often, believe me :)

Hey OP, maybe your super should take a dump on your desk every time you are late? Bet you won't do it too often then :)

I would say 70% of the lateness is due to the pathetic unreliable public transport in london, but like everyone, i over sleep and forget to set my alarm sometimes. Anyone else have this problem?

That week beginning the 5th of September was a bad on then ?

Late every day for 6 days running, then 2 weeks later you're late for 3 days of the same week.

Then late 3 days in a row in november, then 2 weeks later late for 2 days in a row

Take it this is pretty much every time you work the early shift then ?

Get up earlier !

I would have sacked you a long time ago......actually you would have been warned well before it got that bad but ultimately if you continued you would have been shown the door.

I am never late, reason being is because I am the first one in and the support line opens @ 8, however if I am, the call will simply trip over to a PA service who will take a message and send me a text :)

That is a stupid amount of late though OP

Think its all been said and hopefully you have taken it on board, would be great to hear how the disciplinary goes ;)

I work for solicitors and they charge ridiculous amounts per hour and even charge for photocopies, so i thought in order to get respect you have to take your time seriously.

But my lateness is not premeditated, i am not trying to take the ****, i genuinely want to get in on time. crap happens too much i guess...needs to re-evaluate my attitude towards time keeping and also try to leave 15 mins at least. /thread

if they sack you then apply to them to take themselves to a tribunal

Being late on the 'early shift' perhaps isn't great as they obviously want someone there early else they wouldn't have created an 'early shift'.

Tis especially bad form if your employer pays you extra when coming in early or if you need to take over from someone else who's perhpas worked a night shift.

However I'd say for 9-5 jobs in general flexibility should be given - what difference does turning in at 9:30 make so long as you stay late to make up the lost time.

Unless I've got a meeting at say 8:30 or 9:00 etc.. then I'll frequently come in at any random time up until about 10:00am. Technically our contract says we're to work from 9 - 5:30 but it would be monumentally silly of any senior manager tried to enforce turning up at 9 as its equally easy for employees to enforce going home at 5:30 and taking their full lunch break. We're expected to get projects finished and that sometimes involves working late - I wouldn't expect to be told I have to come in by 9:00 on the dot any more than my employer expects to be told 'erm we're not going to get the software sent today as its 5:25 and I finish in 5 mins....' - If I'm going to have lunch at my desk and stay an hour or two extra then I'll have my 30 mins extra in bed (or more if hungover on a Friday).

If its central London and you're not living like a student then £30k isn't that much tbh... 'struggling' does sound a bit far fetched but if you wanted to rent somewhere by yourself (not a tiny bedsit), in a nice area within zone 1 or 2 then you would likely be struggling. You'd pretty much have no chance of buying property at any rate.

I drive back from Portsmouth to Somerset on a Tuesday morning to be at work for 9, and I've only been 20 minutes late twice and both times were due to grisly lane closing accidents.
