I have been under a rock for a while. Did the people who recommend Far Cry 3 also like Far Cry 2? Is it better?

I thought Far Cry 2 was 'ok' but it got very repetitve so I never played much of it.

It's not new but I've just started playing Just Cause 2 single player. Really good fun.

Borderlands 2 was pretty much the exact same as Borderlands 1. Got bored after level 10.

Xcom isn't a bad shout.. Looks a really entertaining game.

I think Far Cry 3 is really a bit of a change from the standard Boot'n'Shoot games. I've spent atleast 3/4's of my time hunting animals. Thats fun!

Avoid Dead Space 3 like the filthy rotting plague rat that it is.

Far Cry 3, Hitman Absolution, Deus Ex: Human Revolution & Dishonored are 4 of the best single player games going period, although Deus Ex is a few years old now.
