I give it a month, maybe two at the outside. As you say, they've started the transition process now.

SETI Classic users take note. ;)
 
they won't install boinc on that meny PCs
I know I wouldn't unless I could look at the sorce
 
what I ment was that having a auto updating programme seems like a risk waiting to happen.
how hard would it be to alter the local dns listings to change the seti update page to another server (ie your own) thats hosting a virus so when someone clicks update on their PC it updates from your server address rather than the real seti servers?

In preparation for shutting down SETI@home Classic (in about 1 month, hopefully) we're trying to make sure that SETI@home Classic accounts are linked to the proper SETI@home/BOINC account. This is a bit complicated because of email address changes. See our current transition plan.

Pretty much all DC projects will download updates on demand now - even non-BOINC ones (Folding@home does, for example). It is possible to block the updates if you want to, but doing so will prevent a computer from doing work after the update. There are also ways to avoid DNS spoofing attacks (some of which are implemented in the DC projects themselves).

*sigh* Me too. You revel in the glory of having stomped someone, only to find that they have 500 stashed woos and come right back at you. But fortunately you have a stash yourself, not to mention the dozens of 'sweet woos' you're getting lately.

Actually, these aren't the last snapshots at all. We were just making up for the fact that we having sync'ed up the classic->BOINC stats in a while. It's not like we're shutting down tomorrow or anything. At least a month away. Probably a lot more.
