Anybody got a Latex mattress? Would you say its worth the extra money over a traditional pocket spring mattress? One of the qualities of latex over memory foam is that its supposed to be much cooler, is this the case?

Model i'm looking at is this one from John Ryan (If they even deliver to NI otherwise im back to square one), local bed shops only have one or two cheap latex ones by Slumberland etc in stock and i'm sure they aren't comparable to this one so cant really get a good feel for them.

We were looking at these over the weekend. We didn't find the ones we tried that comfortable and I question how well these work when you start adding mattress protectors and sheets.

My missus was trying some of the latex pillows out but ended up going for microfibre.

When you say you didnt find them comfortable what do you mean exactly? Too firm/soft? Can you remember which brands you were trying?

No idea on brands I'm afraid. I just didn't like the feel of them, not hard as the overall feel but when you move it just felt a bit odd. Can't explain more than that, best give them a go.

We're still on our 11 year old pocket sprung and won't be moving over to a latex mattress that's for sure.

We have a few mattresses in the house. A very nice pocket sprung Vi spring which my wife likes but cost more than some new cars.

The next one is by ergoflex and it's amazing. Very cheap but so so comfortable. Its a little warm but not too much. I think it cost 500 quid

Then some local bed shop memory foam mattress. Cost 1k but it's awful. Very uncomfortable and a complete waste of money.

I know nothing about latex but I would be worried about developing allergies

I've got an Ikea latex mattress. Its been extremely comfortable for the last 4 years.
Soft or Firm depends on the thickness of the mattress and they don't degrade over time.
Its also meant to be hypoallergenic.
It is very heavy though compared to a regular pocket+spring mattress.
I can't comment on comparing it to more expensive mattresses though.

Hmm sounds like ill have to do a little more research and see if any other bed shops stock decent ones to try. Memory foam is not being considered as its too slow to react and too warm to sleep on for me. Liked the idea of the one I linked to as it was 1500 pocket spring withe latex for comfort and support, my pocket spring mattress at the minute is hell on my back so would like the extra support of the top layer to keep my spine in line. Cheers guys.

I use a mattress protector on my memory foam mattress. It stops it developing hot spots but also defeats the point of it a little.

We've had Dunlopillo latex mattresses for over 10 years now. I've also had cheaper memory foam mattresses to compare to. The latex mattresses are so much cooler in the summer and we've had no issues using mattress protectors or any sort of bedding.

They're not cheap mind and are best matched with their own bases. They're also heavy as hell. I can understand some people thinking they feel a little odd. It is a different feeling but it is so consistently comfortable and the first mattress we got in 1998 is still going strong.

I thought the latex mattresses were traditional pocket spring ones with a latex topper built in.

They can be both, most of the latex mattresses from dunlopillo have no springs and are a lot thinner than the sprung ones. Would prefer sprung but I haven't tried any decent latex ones yet, hard to find. There's a Sealy one in a local bed shop but its only £450 and i doubt its much cop. Was comfortable though but it wasn't sprung.

Just to add, Factory Beds Direct are brill :).

I'm pretty sure it was one of your posts that pointed me in their direction. :) If I'm not convinced with a latex one ill be ordering one of their pocket spring ones anyway.

I bought this exact mattress from these guys a few weeks ago. Couldn't be happier with it. One thing, when I paid for it they phoned same day to ask about mine and the Mrs body weights as this is considered quite a firm mattress. I weigh 12.5 stone and the Mrs is 10 stone but suffers with back problems so prefers a firm mattress. I didn't find it particularly 'cool' to sleep on to start with but I think that was more to do with new duvet etc (13.5 tog) and I am a hot sleeper anyway. I was finding the bed very hot for the first few days but not now, maybe I have got used to it.

We have a sprung divan base which the lady I spoke to from that site said was good to have with that mattress type. I can't really say whether there is any advantage over a traditional pocket sprung as the mattress we replaced was about 10 years old, cheap and lumpy.

Best advice I can give would be to give them a call and talk to them about it, they are very friendly and full of advice. They were almost advising us to go with the next mattress down which was the non latex origins pocket 1500. This speaks volumes as normally a company would take the maximum money you can give and run with it no questions asked.

That's a good sign! Yeah I'm aware of the weight affecting the firmness, it'll be the same situation for me, our current mattress is firm so both of us should find it no problem, obviously a bit less firm for me. I'll be calling in to Debenhams at some point this week to try their latex ones, they seem fairly decent so hopefully will give a reasonable idea of comfort levels.

Latex + pocket sprung = best of all worlds.

4 years on and still the most comfy bed I have ever slept in.
