Hi all,

I've noticed the fan in my laptop has been quite loud recently. I downloaded core temp and when I saw the temp it was sitting at i couldn't believe my eyes. Its 65c at idle!!

Its a compaq with a AMD Sempron SI-42(sable) CPU, being AMD am i correct in thinking that the max is 62c?

Also is it easy for me to re-seat the cooler? to see if that would lower things.

EDIT - just noticed my bad spelling in the title - sorry!

Thanks, should have thought to look at that myself!

Do you know how easy it would be to re-apply the paste to the CPU to see if this lowers the temps as the fans quite loud?

Mobile CPUs do get very toasty. My i7 runs at about 60c idle. That said it's usually a good idea to open older laptops up and clear out the dust/reapply the paste. Can be pretty difficult to take them apart though.

I pulled mine apart the other day.
Gave it a decent clean, some new TIM and it all went well.
Everything is a lot cooler now.

Get it done, dont be a girl
And dont worry if you have a few screws leftover. Everytime I clean this out i end up with a random screw from somewhere.

Will try tomorrow after I've done my studying. Sounds like a bit when replacing car parts, i always seem to have bits left over as well! :D

Laptops have vents on the bottom, that is a horrible or should I say stupid design. I mean OMG, it sits on laps people!!!

with this one, the fan sucks the air FROM the bottom & vents via the back, since I had this laptop its been sitting on a large book to make sure there's enough space to suck air in. Since the fan went nuts its sitting on my wallet which raised it by 1/2 inch :D:D (OcUK taking all of the good stuff out of it!:D)

Although I've generally found AMD mobile cpus to run particularly hot compared to Intel's, 65C at idle is very hot for that particular CPU (TDP of 25w). Coupled with loud noises from the fan, it sounds like the fan's bearings could be on their way out (if the heatsink / airways are clear of dust that is!).

I hope not, I didn't have time to go out today but next week I'm getting some air so will try this first. Thanks for your help!!

I have the i7 MacBook (2011) and it runs very very hot, 65C easy. If i leave fan control to automatic it will happily heat up to 80-85C

Some laptops have a hatch with a few screws above the fan, remove that and then the fan for super easy cleaning, tho most require a full break down and mother board removal.
