from what i've read at other review sites, the gt640 is initially launching with ddr3, not gddr3/gddr5...so it'll be very heavily bandwidth starved

Fingers crossed for the GDDR5 version. Could be the card of choice for my lil bro's rig I will be putting together in a few months.

According to Toms Hardware this card is beaten by an HD6670 GDDR5 in 4 of 7 tests including BF3,Metro2033 and Crysis 2.

Even,if GDDR5 adds 40% performance, this card will barely beat the first version of the HD7750 GDDR5 it seems. The worst thing the HD7750 has a cut down GPU too, with the HD7770 having the full GPU. Both the GK107 and Cape Verde are more or less the same size too,and an HD7770 looks to be faster even if the GT640 gains GDDR5.

ATM,this card is not that great for the price. If you want good performance/watt,the HD7750 is cheaper and if you want performance an HD6850 can be had for under £100.
Even the HD7770 can be had for around £100 now:

This should have been launched with GDDR5 at under £100. I don't see HD7750 prices shifting for a while now.

I was excited when I first saw this. Then I went on a binge searching for benchmarks and comparisons. It seems to be worse than the similarly price GTX550ti. However if it goes down to £70 or less it would be worth it to buy this. I can't remember the exact site but apparently the performance of the 2GB gddr5 is supposed to be similar to the GTX550ti. Even so, with the current price of the gddr3 version, when that comes out, it'll be more expensive and just as bad value for money. To sell these cards right nvidia need to sort out the pricing. I'll stick to my ati hd6770 (still better performance than this for a lower price).

Criticisms aside it's a pretty nice piece of hardware. It squeezes power in at just under the 75W limit of the PCIe bus and so doesn't need any power cables or even a high wattage PSU. Very good performance for power. And 2gb memory should be useful for high resolutions and multi-monitor displays. Plus it's brand new so hopefully the price will settle down after a while. And we should get a better idea of how good it is once consumers have tried it out. There's hardly any videos of this card either in action or being unboxed.

Still, is this a taste of whats to come with the GTX 650s and 660s? Will nvidia continue to make these cards more expensive than the competitors (including the 500 series). The 650 would probably be around similar price mark to the 560ti and the 660 will be around 570s price. Anyone wanting to buy a GT640 right now, I'd go for a hd6850 instead or wait it out and see what happens.

Going a bit off topic...
Whats with the 4GB RAM requirement for the HD7750?
