I have followed the lawn threads in here over the years and looked on with envy! We have quite a big lawn and when we moved in it looked like this;

Over the first couple of years the grassed area was saved and looked like grass, it was a horror show as when you hacked it all down it was just matted roots but loads of work with a rake and scariffier got a pretty decent base lawn. However the past couple of years it has had no love, infact we had to dig a soakaway in the lower bit of the garden (not in the pic) have some trees out and generally the lawn only got cut.

The plan is to now sort the lawn out, landscape the garden and give it some attention - its not going to be quick and my main questions are around where and what to buy. Having done the usual b&q runs in the past for weed, seed & feed i want to separate the process.

What lawn sand and spreader do people recommend as a start? (i have a cheap and nasty evergreen one and its next to useless)

Secondly while i intend to pick out any big weeds is there a decent weed killer?

Dig them out, same goes for roots and weeds and stop being lazy! They wont grow back that way! It's the only way to do a proper job, you could pee on weeds and that would do more good than the crap they so call weed killer.

By the looks of that, you'd be better off digging everything out and relaying new turf and starting from scratch :p

I have been out digging weeds in the grass, got loads of the blighters - when i went into the garage i found a bottle of verdone and i then remembered i ordered it with a bar thing for my watering can last year!!

Guys, anyone recommend a drop spreader - they seem to vary in price from £5 for the horrible evergreen one up to several hundred, is the Scotts evergreen a decent one for £30 or is it worth spending more??

SHall be keeping an eye on this thread, I'm trying to sort out my lawn too and am looking at weed killers etc including the Verdone one.

Also interested in the drop spreaders as it will be very useful for not only the weed killer but also when I oversew at the end of the summer!
