Hello all

I need a lawn mower
Budget about £150
Probably not enough for cordless + remotely decent

Can anyone make my day easier and just tell me one I should buy? Thanks

A couple of follow up questions...

How big is your garden?
Do you want petrol or electric?

I have been using a 'Viking' electric mower for about 7 years now which has not missed a beat.

I have always been in the market for mid-range electric of around the price you mention. I've never had a lawn that seemed big enough to bother with petrol, and I don't trust cordless to not bog down due to lack of power.

I have had mostly Flymo or Bosch, and my vote would strongly go towards the Bosch Rotak too. Each FLymo I've had has sounded good, and seemed to have good features. But they've all been badly implemented, and the mowers have been not terribly well put together.

Examples:
A grass collection bucket within the body of the mower for compactness. But it means the design for airflow is less good, and it clogs up very easily, Tend to need to empty it twice as often when it's not even full.
An easy to use height adjustment lever. Except it works on a system where it slots into one of a series of notches. The notches and the lever itself are both made of a plastic lacking in durability, so after a season of use they've rounded off and it regularly slips out, drops the mower to its lowest setting, and scalps a round patch of your lawn. The last few years of its life, the mower had a bungee strap holding the lever in place.

Oh, and when I complained about the stupid lever design they were completely uninterested.

When I finally gave up on that mower, I moved to the Rotak, and it has been simple, effective, and done what it's supposed to for 3 years now with no problems.

I purchased a Worx WG779E.2 recently and find it superb.

It is a cordless one and came with 2 batteries and a charger which can be charge both batteries at the same time.

It cost me a little over £180 but is now showing at £200 on Amazon. I also got it on the 5 monthly instalment plan, interest free (no credit check).

Each battery last about 25-30 mins and with 2 fully charged batteries it is more than enough to cover a 12 x 6 metre garden. I've since purchased other Worx items as the batteries are interchangeable so now have 4 batteries.

I had my mind initially set on a Bosch 32 or 36 cm model which was electric but it went out of stock.

Agree with the comments regarding Flymo vs Bosch. Had a few Flymos and they've all failed after a few years. The latest purchase was a Bosch and it is certainly much better.

Had a Bosch Rotak 34 for over 15 years now and it has always performed very well. Do empty the grass catcher at around 3/4 full or it starts to leave cuttings in its’ wake.

Do have a spare set of the plastic locking rings which lock the blade to the motor shaft as these shear when you hit a rock/laundry rack ground tube to protect the motor.

Stock blade lasts for ever and you just need to touch it up with a file when the cutting edges get dinged up.

I've got a Flymo Easiglide 300. It's nothing more than fine and not being self propelled makes it hard work. We've now got a gardener (I think he does the lawn with a strimmer with much better results than I can achieve!), but I'd save my pennies next time and go for a self propelled petrol mower.

Depends on the size of your lawn ultimately.

as regards cordless and the budget ,my 40 volt spear and jackson is really awesome it was £180 but thats some years back, it cuts well and has never run out on me ,the bottom lawn is maybe 180 ft but not too wide ,always found petrol a total pain
