It's related to their wedding vows that they wrote on a post it note at the end of series 5. So when Meredith wanted to stop Derek from blabbing about the chief she used their wedding as an excuse as to why he couldn't.

Don't try and wipe your ass with three post-it notes stuck together. It doesn't work well.
