Hi all. Just wondering what you think would be the best way to approach this.

Basically the whole downstairs of my new house is going to be fairly open plan. I've just taken the wall down between our kitchen and diner so that is part of the open plan living space. Total area is about 40-45sqm.

I've ripped up all of the old laminate that was down and the underlay under that and i've noticed the floor isn't quite level in parts, it dips in places and i'm a bit concerned that if I just lay laminate down on some Sonic Gold underlay that you'll be able to notice the wavyness of the floor in the laminate.

Would I be better using something like the large green underlay boards you can buy over the entire floor in the hope this will give the floor a better level? And to then lay something like the Sonic Gold underlay over that, or is that complete and utter overkill?

I need to assess just how uneven the floor is as I don't particularly remember the floor being uneven to look at when the old laminate was down but now what i've taken the old stuff up its a bit more apparent.

Could it be exaggerated because i've removed the skirting boards too?

I had an uneven floor in my old house, I put down Sonic Gold followed by that green stuff. It ended up alright but a bit bouncy underfoot. I should have just had it levelled with compound really but it wasn't horrific or anything.

No not on floorboards, 3mm ply or some stiff laminate underlay in the dips then sonic gold on top should be all you will need.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Any recommendation on how thick the ply should be?

EDIT - doh, completely missed that you said 3mm ply haha!

Would 6mm MDF be a good thing to use or should i strictly stick to plywood?

6mm MDF is a fair bit cheaper than 6mm ply. Is there a reason to go ply over MDF?
