Make sure you rake the soil your laying it on to get rid of large stones, twigs etc.
- lay the turfs much closer together than you think you need to, you almost want them to overlap. Then lift up both edges of the two turfs and then "force" them together as you lay them flat on to the soil. This will make sure you dont get visable seams in your lawn and also stops it drying out through large seams.
- the secret to laying a good turf is actually what you do after youve layed it. Water it at least twice a day (morning and evening) and dont water it during the day if the sun is hot, it will burn the grass (magnifying glass effect). If you dont water it enough it will shrivel, become brown and die, and a lot of money will be wasted.
- you can cut the turf into shapes with a normal kitchen knife, as long as you dont mind it being blunt afterwards, however its pretty much the best way to cut it.
- you dont have to use boards to stand on when your laying it (unless you weigh like 200lbs) but its best not to kneel or stamp on the turf or you will kill the roots underneith, common sense really.
Thats it, its not rocket science.
Edit: another good bit of advice is to buy the best turf you can afford, it really does make a difference. Cheap turf wont have been kept properly and will be yellow/brown and dry, good quality expensive turf will have a thick soil on it and it will be moist with a good green colour on the grass. try and see the turf before you buy it, or if your having it delivered just refuse delivery if you think it looks carp.
