Layoffs hit id Software

My first thoughts are that is normal after releasing a big title if you have nothing on the horizon....?

Marketing, testers and others are simply not needed ALL the time unless your a AAA publisher/developer.

Rage wasn't exactly fantastic from what I heard, still Zenimax (who own both id and Bethesda) can't be hurting for money right now after the great financial and critical success of Skyrim.

Eh, at this point I really don't care.

After Rage I really don't want to see what they end up doing with Doom 4.

As mentioned above its not as significant as the headline might seem. I have a friend who has twice done stints at id software I believe - not sure exact details - doing web development on certain titles but is not continously employed there, quite often people are brought in to work on a title and then some leave once development is done - there are a whole load of casual roles around a title that aren't continous positions.

i thought rage was quite good?

It was.

From the article:

restructure its development team

id regularly evaluates staffing to ensure it has a workforce that meets the needs of the studio

id is still recruiting and hiring qualified developers

Sounds more like spring cleaning to me. As said, it's not unusual after a big project ends to make changes, get rid of the people that they don't have need for going forwards.
