Lazy people at work

Chaps, having worked in construction all my working life I've never encountered this 1st/2nd/3rd line lingo, could someone enlighten me please?

basically an escalation process for problems...

Someone phones in, there internet is down - 1st line can sort it..

Someone phones in, computer has internet but internet is not working - 1st cant sort it...so he escalates to 2nd...who realises the network controller has disabled itseld for some reason, he fixes it...

Someone phones in, computer should have internet, network controller is working....but no net? - 1st line, cant do it, 2nd line has issue, 3rd line realises the settings on the router are jaffed and wrong for whatever reason, and fixes them...

The above is an example....Places i've worked at I could have probably diagnosed that and fixed the router if I knew the IP off hand or could find it out and knew the settings needed (even though i've never been classed as 1st/1nd/3rd line)...however most places wouldnt have that small of an escalation cycle :p

:D haha, So true.

No the guy has not said a word to me since he freaked out about me asking him to pitch in and help us out. hahaha

ignore the fact he freaked out and ask him again, if he freaks out complain to hr about his conduct, if he says no complain to the boss...

A good example just came through where the client has asked me to deal with two adsl lines that are have expired. One we need to cancel and the other needs to be renewed it is a 2mbit at £340 pa so it is an old contract and over priced. I suggested getting their latest contract etc. He has asked me to do it. Surely this is something the project/3rd line guy should be doing ?

Sounds like the reverse angle of what i have at work, at my work i would be the equivalent to the 3rd line person and another tech would be the equivalent to 1st/2nd line, he is constantly walking in to my office and asking what im doing and leaning around looking at my monitors, and i know why he does it, because he thinks when im in the office all day that im not doing anything, when in actual fact i'm working my ******* off all day long, i never give him a straight answer to what im doing because 99.9% of the time the **** interrupts my train of thought when im trying to do something.......... i had better stop before i go in to rage mode and start a long reply of anger about the useless wastes of space i work with.

I'm not saying that he is working hard and you just can't tell because all his work is hidden away, just consider that it's a possibility. Can you always see his screen and the tasks he is working on?

Surely this is something the project/3rd line guy should be doing ?

You're probably the only one that can answer that seeing as it depends on what the competency levels set out in your job description/contracts are in your particular place of work :)

Yea i know what he does and how much work he does because it is a small office and i know everything that happens in it. I know what he is working on and what he has to do, i also hear him talking to his wife and ordering things on the internet. I sit on here and reddit all day so i won't be complaining about that. I just think he should take on some of more of the tasks than he currently does.

But now if i make an issue about this adsl renewal the hole thing could get ugly and blown out of proportion, the client does not care which one of us does it, as long as it gets done. I could look like a moaning git if i go to my manager and say he should do this adsl contract stuff.

but i am not overly stressed about it, just wanted to hear some diff perspectives on it.

If you can handle the work load, then do it

But if you cant do all the work and end up getting too stressed about things (like i did in my last job) then ask for help...no point working yourself silly and getting signed off

Then from the sounds of things i think you're perfectly justified passing work up the line even if it isn't his job. If he is sat there doing nothing then that's simply the companies money being wasted in paying him to be there.

Though most people won't accept being given job from those deemed as below them (i know i personally get quite funny if the guy below me tries to pass off jobs to me, though in my case he has absolutely no right to, much larger network and a lot more for me to do than your 3rd liner!) So you will no doubt need to go through your line manager in order to jobs to be passed down to him, if your line manager won't do anything about it then something should be done about it higher up.

adsl contract's doesn't remotely sound like a third line commitment, if anything it's admin work.

Don't forget with business ADSL you keep a fixed IP which is the main reason for the overcharge (criminal I know), which is vital for tunneling.

anyway I'm waffling

It's the same everywhere. The higher paid management do less work, while expecting you to be non-stop, while you do all the work and get paid peanuts.

Don't know why you're complaining tbh. This is how the world works! You are just a bottom-rung-of-the-ladder nobody who hasn't yet earned the right to critique those above you. Those who, it must be said, have probably got to where they are after years of being in your shoes.

If you keep your head down and work hard you'll be in his position soon enough, raking in the cash and doing as little as possible. Gives you something to aspire to at least.

This I have to agree with too.

You having a laugh ? maybe you can tell me what is meant to be my job then, if i started saying stuff was not within my job spec then half the stuff would not get done on site and then who would get the blame ?

Your job description will tell you what is meant to be your job ;)

If the stuff not being done is in your job spec, then you get the blame.

If the stuff not being done is in his job spec, he should ultimately get the blame.

Without having his and your job descriptions infront of us it'll be difficult to really know the situation as to who should do what.

He probably doens't want to be there 2 days a week anyway, it's probably just in the contract between the 2 companies that they will put someone there for the 2 days for whatever reason so he has to be.

All this with no pay rises for 5 years, I'd be finding a new job if I were you :)
