Lazy people at work

Don't know why you're complaining tbh. This is how the world works! You are just a bottom-rung-of-the-ladder nobody who hasn't yet earned the right to critique those above you. Those who, it must be said, have probably got to where they are after years of being in your shoes.

If you keep your head down and work hard you'll be in his position soon enough, raking in the cash and doing as little as possible. Gives you something to aspire to at least.

If someone is observing someone else "not doing it right" why should they not be allowed to give critique if they have no experience? What crazy talk is that?

If someone is barking orders instead of approaching in a polite and reasonable manner, then sure they are a tool - no matter what the pay-grade - but seriously? "Don't talk to me, apprentice!" attitude?

Every company is different and so are the people at different level. Point is its very easy for someone to say "god that person is well lazy" just because they dont have the visability of the work they do. Also 3rd line in most companies is a step on the esclation route. So they might do less calls and standard work but deal with long winded calls or projects.

I have worked in a mix of different levels from first to third line and the last 3 postions in different companies all being 3rd line. Currently the position I'm in is a mix of esclations and project work.

Personally I wouldnt worry about what he is doing at the end of the day if he doesnt do anything and you do all the work if it ever comes to letting people go they will normally get value for money before anything else. But you need to approach the work load in a professional manner otherwise your rub people above you the wrong way and wont get anywhere. The trick is not to throw your toys out of the pram and instead speak to a manager and ask the reasons why you do so much an they do so little. This way if they turn around and explain to you the reasons you might have a better picture of his work (which you say you already know) if the manager cant explain what he does or why he does so little it gives you room to make some sensible suggestions to help spread the work load across your team better managing the overall work load and spreading sinergy :D Maybe even a pay rise for all your hard work if noted.

Ill leave you with this old classic to cheer you up

Embrace the extra work on servers, think of it as experience. Then when you're ready to move on you can apply for 3rd line roles.

Most 1st/2nd line guys would love the opportunity to learn this stuff.

Indeed. Even if I was a lazy bum I would still be pee'd off if the 1st/2nd line support guy who's only worked for the company for 8 months asked/told me to do more work. No good can come from it even if you happen to be right.

I'm sure some people in the company would walk into your office and see you browsing the web and maybe go and post on a forum somewhere about how the IT guys never do any work.

In reality, you were on Technet checking some Active Directory stuff.

Don't judge other peoples work when you've probably got no idea.

If you are confident in your working ability simply contact your companies auditing department. They will come in and spend weeks watching and sometimes following employees round with a clipboard and making them justify their workload. If needs be they may even issue pay or job cuts should they discover anything that is not in the companies interests. If you goto your mananger he may try to brush under carpet as it coud reflect badly on him.

how can you be 1st AND 2nd line support, what do you tell customers? "I'll escalate that from me to me .."

No, you say what me and my workmate say. "I'll look into it, sort it and get back to you"

Ive been 1st / 2nd line support for two and a half years now. Been made redundant recently though so back on the search
