LCD display and fans

I'm interested in rigging up some kind of LCD display in a 5.25" drive bay, such as the ones Matrix Orbital do with an LCD screen and a surround which has some directional and function buttons on it.

Thing is, not only do I want to be able to display various system info on the screen but I want to be able to use it to adjust fan speeds aswell, removing the need for a separate fan controller.

Does anyone do such a thing or the components I need to put one together?

Whatever you do, don't get the Zalman MFC2. The display is crap, can't read it unless it's at exact eye level directly in front of you. Way overpriced.

That said, I've never tried any others.

Well I've looked at those Matrix Orbital ones and a simple 20x2 line character LCD with a 5.25" bezel with control buttons on it looks just the ticket but I'm a bit confused as to what else I need to cable it all up and control fans and also how many fans it will cope with.

It's all very confusing.
