LCD monitor hum

I have just moved from a CRT to an lcd - the NEC Multisync LCD 2690WUXi. I use my pc for graphics work and the NEC2690 is a very good successor to my crt except that it hums. Specifically, it has a high pitched hum that varies with the brightness settings - with low settings giving the most hum and high brightness settings giving the least (but never none).

This is a problem which has been noticed by a number of European purchasers who have discussed the issue in the [H]ardforum. Curiously, so far as anyone can discover, this noise problem does not seen to occur with many US versions of the NEC 2690.

The brightness settings connection to the noise suggests that there may be some problem with the dimmer or brightness control but why should european models have this problem and not US ones? It has also been suggested that it might have something to do with the different mains voltages. Indeed, one enterprising contributor has said that it might be worth buying a transformer to convert the UK mains voltage (I'm in the UK) down to the US one and see what effect that has on the high pitched noise.

If you're interested, you can see the discussion thread and hear recordings of the noise here -

(page 26 onwards)

This all sounds pretty bizarre, but late at night, when it's generally quiet, the noise is fantastically irritating and has to be drowned out with some other noise.

I am just raising this here for any advice and learning on the general issue and for any ideas anyone may have. I have never had an LCD before - do they normally produce a high pitched hum? What might be the reason for this? Do you think that running the lcd display on US voltage might solve the problem? I don't want to fry the lcd but it says in it's specs that it can cover "AC 100-200 V - 50-60Hz". Current rating is "1.5-0.75A (with option )" [whatever that is] and "For reference 1.2A (without option)".

It's an expensive and very nice lcd except for this one problem and I'd like to hang on to it. NEC UK (and everywhere else so far as has been observed) are just keeping their heads down. The european models are probably within NEC noise standards (whatever they are) but too loud for those of us sensitive to noise.

Grateful for any help or ideas on this - and on whether I am likely to blow up my display if I try a transformer (which of course could be even louder than my screen and pc put together!)

Thanks

David

Lots (all?) of LCDs do to some extent, although I usually find that noise decreases with increasing backlight. Its apparence is very environmentally dependant, but after taking severe PC quietening measures it can be quite perturbing I agree.

We're on 230V...surely just a typo/oversight on their part though.

Thanks. Is it the brightness control that affects the backlight? There is also a control on the NEC called Colorcomp which affects the overall luminance is that the backlight control? The expression "backlight" does not appear in the manual.

My mistake. Should be "240" not "200".

All kind of displays, CRT, LCD and others all make some kind of noise to me. Honestly I would say a CRT is usually louder and more annoying than any LCD I've heard. Could be something wrong with it?
