Just wondering if anyone can explain to me why a 30" monitor can have a higher res than a 50 or 60 inch lcd tv through the vga port (or in general).

Just confuses me how a £2999 60 inch tv can't have the res of the 30 inch dell 3007.

I would hazzard a guess it's to do with the resolutions needed for screening tv on the panal (HD 720 & 1080) I expect that the pc resolutions are probably secondary as the screens primary function is to display tv, obviously it would be the other way round for a dedicated monitor. Not sure that sounds right now......anyways it's an attempt at an answer ;)

it's because it's hard enough making massive panels for TV's as it is, and resolutions of that size would be very hard to incorporate. Add to that the fact that there isn't really the need in TV's (in fact it would have an adverse effect) since there isn't media of that resolution available, and there's no real point at this stage. We're only just starting to see the emergence of 1920 x 1080 res content, so some TV's are now featuring this as their resolution (1080i/p), but it will be a while before we see the next stage of enhanced HD content above 1080 res.
