Hi all,

First n00b post on these forums.

Are there many people using LCD / plasma TVs for PC gaming. I know a lot of people are using PS3s and xbox360s for HD gaming, but is it possible to run PC games in 1080p or 1920x1080 resolutions.

I know the latter res is achievable, but what would the res look like on a 42" or 46" TV.

Are there any disadvantages of using a TV compared to the typical LCD gaming monitors on the market? (Price and size are not issues).
Contrast ratios and refresh rates appear to much higher on TVs

I’m contemplating buying a new TV as well as 24” dell, but not sure the Dell is worth it if the top of the range 1080p Tvs can do a pretty good job.

cheers :)

p,s going to be buying either a 8800GT or GTS before christmas

The main issue has usually been response time although TVs are improving in this regard.

Personally I reckon 1920x1080 on a 42" would rock. Sure, it will be 'blocky' compared to a Monitor, but the extra size more than makes up for that.

Just so long as you never have to use it for desktop work!

if your using a HDTV for your pc, then your better off with an LCD over plasma, because of burn in, etc. They are great, although people do say response time is bad, etc but thats not really true, so long as you buy a decent screen. just check major reviews before purchasing, i used to game on my 32inch HDTV because i gave my tft to my dad, i waited over a year before purchasing my nec, the tv was amazing for everything, although you do have to sit about 6-7 feet away from it

I played Bioshock and Portal on my 42" Sammy Plasma (only 720p) and it was amazing:D

Played in my bed about 10ft away but also played at the end of my bed about 5ft away and both looked great. I did have full AA on as at the lower res it needed it but at full HD you could get away without it;)

The burn in isn't a worry really... I mean I play Halo 3 on it for longer and the HUD on that doesn't burn-in so why would a PC link be different? As long as it's out of Dynamic mode and the contrast is set below 50 for the first 150-200 hours it's fine.... Unless you play UNO for 10+ hours... then you have the cards on the sides of your screen for about 10 mins... scary stuff when that happens but it goes quickly, it's only Image Retention. Anywho rant over.

If all your going to be doing on it is gaming or watching HD stuff then get a LCD. IMO if your only going to be gaming on it every now and again (Console or PC) and mainly watching freeview/Sky (non HD) then I would get a Plasma. I feel that SD stuff on a Plasma wins hands down but that's my opinion.

The pixels on a 40" 1080p are tiny, so gaming looks superb. Not blocky at all. My 20" looks fine compared to it, and considering twice the size, the pixels don't look twice as big.

i second that and i have a 46" LCD-TV! i love gaming on a 46" screen (you soon forget its a TV and not a monitor). i also find at 1080p the desktop is also OK.

Guys - thanks very much for the feedback. I’m pretty much sold. I will still buy a dedicated monitor for my office, but I’m looking forward to setting up my new gaming rig to a 42” or 46” LCd. I think it’s the way forward. Immersive gaming!!!

The next chapter will be to work out what TV to buy.
