LCD Resolution on Poor Picture

Sorry if this is the wrong section.

Ive recently purchased a cheap 26" LCD TV. It will be mainly used for sky and dvd, however last night i connected it up to my pc.

Im using a DV-I to HDMI adapter (HDMI in the TV).
The TV is HD Ready, and its native res is 1280 x 768.

However if i use this reolution on the computer , the outer regions are off screen.

So firstly, why is that? Surely if its the LCD's native res it should look fine. I know you can use overscan etc.

Also whilst Media Center, Video/DVD playback and games look superb. The desktop in general is quite blurry and the text is difficult to read.

Is that normal? Can i tweak it in anyway?

Any help appreciated.

It sounds like overscan. Is there any option to switch it off in the graphics driver. I have a Mac Mini and have that option.

Sorry i should have said.

I have three options im using an Nvidia 7600GS.

I can use native mode, underscan (i think) and overscan.

When i use native mode im loosing the edges of the screen. Which shouldnt be the case (at least in my mind lol)

I can use underscan to make it fit but then im not using the lcd's native resolution

You need to make sure the videocard is set to 1280x768 and not 1366*768

As for the blurriness I can only assume it is because the screen isn't running it's native res or tha fact that it isn't really designed as a computer screen, I have seen a mates setup once, he has a 23" LCD TV and the test is also not as sharp as my 19" TFT.

But maybe you can fiddle with the TV settings a bit.

Just out of interest could you try setting your display resolution to 1024x768 and see if it's still cut off at the edges?

When I was researching my 26" TV I came across a number of budget displays which- when connected via DVI- would actually only display 1024x768, stretched to fill their 1280x768 resolution. Anything outside the 1024 was truncated. Goodness knows why this happens but they supposedly worked fine through standard VGA.

Sean - i cant see that being the issue, its HD ready and support 1920x1080.
Are you sure it supports that resolution

If that is the case you can set the resolution in Windows a lot higher, maybe you need the correct Windows drivers for the LCD TV?

Well i downloaded a program called MonInfo from the same guys that make PowerStrip. It reads the chip inside the screen to get the specs and supported resolutions.

Whatever size i use i can get rid of the over scan, i think its just the way they make these tv's

You are correct in saying that according to Argos the native resolution is 1280 x 786.

However when using the MonInfo program it states that the tv doesnt even support that Res.

I can also confirm that 1920 x 1080 does work fine, ive already tried it.

It might support all those resolutions but only the native resolution will give you a sharp image. The second half of the table are TV resolutions depending on source. If you are connecting to a PC I would not pay attention to them but try to find the native resolution with overscan turned off.

Only at 30hz though for some reason. You need to use the native res for the best picture so 1280x768 is what you should be using.
