Wasn't sure where to put this. How easy is it to remove an lcd screen from a laptop(broken) and make it self supporting with a VGA lead and power lead to just fit to a computer.
Anyone done this, is here kits available?

I can't answer your direct query although i suspect that a mod is very possible - i think i've seen/read about something similar but i can't find the link (yet - i'm sure it's in my favourites somewhere).

I can offer an alternative - (that is if you haven't already discounted it) - there are a couple of companies that specialize in selling laptop screens a lot cheaper than buying directly form the manufacturer - approx £30-£50. It just requires you doing a bit of laptop DIY.

It's not that difficult to take a screen apart and the following is a link that shows a step by step guide on how to take a typical screen apart link. It goes into more detail than you would require - but it shows how straight forward it is to remove a screen from the bezel surround for replacement. (It also shows how it would be possible to remove screen and bezel for a possible mod with an adapter if you were to find one.)

Good luck - i would be interested to know how you get on with either - especially the mod.

I looked into it for about 15 minutes when my laptop died. In those 15 minutes I learnt that it was technically possible but insanely hard.

Good luck if you decide to go ahead with it.

Same, I'm sure I've seen guides and the adapters, which although aren't just plug in, is just simple soldering. But Now I can't find anything.

I have been meaning to do this but have yet to find a donor laptop!

Any guides or info?

Technically possible but insanely hard was what I concluded. The issue is that the things are completely non-standard. The signal running from motherboard to inverted doesn't seem to be anything conventionally found outside of laptops, nor is it the same when comparing different systems. Your best shot is to start off with a screen with matched inverter and then try very hard to determine what sort of signal the laptop feeds it. I suppose this features an oscilloscope.

About the only easy way to go about it is build an imac style thing and use remote desktop. I'd be thrilled for you to make progress on this, I abandoned it after a few weeks of research based around an eeepc 701. Good luck with this
