Am I right in saying that a LCD TV is a lot better at scaling than a PC TFT ??

For instance if I run a computer game at 1024*768 on my 1280*1024 TFT it looks awful, how will a SD cable broadcast look an a 1080p LCD ??

Its pretty true to say the scalers in both are poor, but in general the TV will have a better one than the monitor and this is in part why a TV costs substantially more than a monitor of the sime size and native resolution.

Just an example, my gamecube and original xbox (all connected via s-video) look fine on my LG L32C2D 1366*768 LCDTV, and terrible on my 1680*1050 Dell 2007WFP. View distance comes into it a bit too, but I'm pretty sure the LCDTV has a better upscaler.

Having said that, DVDs on my 360 (connected to the LCDTV) look better than with my non-upscaling Philips DVD player (upscaled by the LCDTV), so that means the 360 has a better upscaler than my LCDTV, which is why I'm going to buy an upscaling DVD player.

SD on a 1080p LCDTV, it will probably look a bit dissapointing to start with because LCDs show up the compression on digital channels, and most digital channels just don't have enough bandwidth for good picture quality. You do get used to it though, and the channels with good signals still look good. To get the best out of the set though, obviously HD is the way forward.

I'm assuming you're talking about a 1080p LCDTV and not a 1080p TFT monitor, which would be a lot worse. I've also tried Sky digital on my Dell and it was again pretty nasty at PC viewing distance, and still didn't look great even at distance.

Well, in a few weeks I am going to find out as I ordered a PS3 and a Sony 40W2000 1080p television

Got a special offer which meant a PS3, HDMI cable and 2 games were free so I couldn't resist and ordered the PS3 + LCD for €2149,00

I have also upgraded my cable reception to digital (requires a decoder) but this is not HDTV afaik, or is it?

PC games look great on my Sony 40W TV, as does my PC desktop, though certain settings must be adjusted initially. I'm pretty sure PS3 games will look le chien's balls on your Sony, though I think the PS3 outputs 720p and not 1080p (could be wrong here).

Yeah, I fully expect HD to look great, it is the normal cable reception I am a little worried about.

But as I have also ordered digital cable I hope it will be good enough.

The PS3 outputs 1080p with a HDMI cable so Blu Ray films will be 1080p and PS3 games are either 720p or 1080p

About the 40W settings, did you spend a long time getting them set up or are the default settings sufficient?

default is pretty much spot on. i found that turning all the processing off except 'clear white' gave me the best picture. i have the backlight on 6, max contrast and the brightness at 48 (50 on my set is a touch too high).

great tv, doesnt really take long to set up:)

Thanks for that, what connection do you have from your computer?

Do you use a DVI > HDMI cable or component?
