I picked up one of these from OC UK while they were on offer, and i have a question about it's installation, it's my first pc build so if this sounds awfully basic stuff sorry....

The manual that came with the car is not great, and it concerns the extra power connector, there is a 6 pin and 4 pin power input sockets do i need to plug a power cord into both of these or just use either a 6 pin or 4 pin?

Next up comes the pc express slot, it just says stick it in the pci express socket, the trouble is my mobo has about 4 of these with slightly differant numbers on the end

first one is a pci express slot, then there are two pci express 2.0 x16 slots, and finally there is a universal pci express slot x16 with a max speed of 4x link, all that has left me a little:confused:

I'm not sure which slot i need to be using to get it work/get max performance

Put it in the 2.0 16x slots. You need to put both power plugs into the card but i think the GTX 280 requires an 8 pin plug rather than a 6 like the slower GTX 260 needs. It should still work perfectly fine with the 6 pin adaptor.

Are you sure the other two PCI slots are PCI-e and not PXI-x?

Your right, there is a 6 pin input and sat next to it is a 8 pin one (dunno were i got 4 from...), so basically both those bad boys need to have a power cord shoved into them ? or just one, in the manual it's not really clear

definately need both those plugged in,i tried as a test leaving one unplugged and i could not get past my fans spinning up,pc would just sit there with a blank monitor.

Agreed with the above, you definately need both, I think if you tried with just one, you'd get a red light come on on the card saying it's not getting enough power and it just won't work.
If you don't have an 8-pin on your PSU, most GTX280's come with a few adapters (usually 2x6-pin to 1x8-pin, and one or two 2x4-pin to 1x6-pin), you can buy these seperately in various places too.

Yup just to echo the above comments both need to be plugged in. I used my PSUs 6+2 pin and a 6 pin and its working great.

I also went for the Leadtek 280, you wont be disappointed :).

I'll find out soon enough when I buy a Q6600. My E2200 @ 3.4 hits 100% load with every game I play. GRID FPS are 25-70 with 4x MSAA on, Flat Out UC is about the same.

I have a Q6600 at 3.7 and a Ledtek 280, and Grid gets around 100 fps with the same settings... if that's any help.

Thanks for all your help guys, my system is now up an running (first self built PC), minus any operating system (i'l install that later) but i can see text on my monitor!!!

Really do apreciate the help i asked quite a few questions on this forum today from HD to Mobo's to GTX's and always got helpful replies

UT3 does, Supreme Commander aswell and I think mass effect also. I'm sure other games do.

Supreme Commander yes. UT3 the gain is not worth it and most cards will run this game well. Mass Effect I'm not sure but I expect the gain to be something like UT3.

I'd only buy a quad for gaming right now if I was a Supreme Commander nut which I'm not.
