A random question really which i'd like to get solved now that i figured out how to use the forum. Back in 2005 i bought one of these babies from ocuk and the one i received looked like this:

GraphicsCard.jpg

It looked a bit umm lets say retarded with the fan being completely out of place so i emailed asking if it was meant to be like that and customer support just said just to try it. It did work even though the temps were a bit high plus I was reluctant at the time to send it back for an RMA. Being a cheap ass student meant i would not able to go for a couple of weeks without a pc due to courseworks and such whilst the whole thing got sorted.

A few months ago the poor little devil gave his last breath of life and i thought 4 years was a good effort considering he was coolingly (if that is not a word it is now) challenged. Just for peace of mind before i throw his corpse into the rubbish tip were all leadtek 6800GTs made with this flaw or was mine unique?

had that exact card and when it was out it was a moster! Mt fan was also off centre so to say but it kicked the bucket after a year and 9 month or so and i sent it under rma. They sent a replacement (same card) back which was doa. Sent that back and got a newer 7000 model however it didnt compare to the 6800GT.

I also thought it was wierd but never asked them the question.

Rroff;15777212 6800 always did run a bit hot - I had a gainward that was clocked to ultra extreme (out the box) performance and its normal running temp was 105C :O[/QUOTE said:
Yep remember mine was 102c, good cards when they came out and could clock them okay aswell.

Remmeber paying around £400 for it aswell and putting it in a dell dimension 8300 and i thought i was the dogs.

I had that card was very good at the time but the temps were insane like mentioned, got 90c+ in some games with a cold room even lol and it lasted me around nearly 3 years before dying.

I think newer gfx cards seem to run a lot cooler though since my GTX275 hits about 55-60c in games max and is severely overclocked.(also seen Radeon 5 series cards hit 50c only fairly often.)

Heh that was my first proper homebuilt "performance" PC - "30 capper" P4 800FSB HT @ 3.6gig, DFI 865 PE Infinity (first x65 board with PAT and CMOS reloaded) along with some OCZ XTC Gold DDR1-500 @ 600MHz (OCZ DDR Booster) and the Gainward GS/GLH 6800 card w/ 512MB DDR3 clocked to ultra extreme performance level. I was so proud of that PC lol.

IIRC when I put it back together awhile back to benchmark crysis it managed 9fps 1280x no AA on high settings.

i had one of those that broke. for ages it was second in the 3D mark leaderboard in the group of cards that where running on socket A.

it died a horrible burning smell death :(

also had a 6800le which started with 8/4 pipes and unlocked to 16/6 IIRC. epic cards where those 6800s

actually turns out mine was a GS. same cooler though im sure. and the fan was definetly out of line

morning,

Yeah i've got to agree with you guys the card was an absolute beast when it came out. I still remember when doom 3 and then FEAR were released the following years and it handled the games with ease.

It is good to know that there were other cards that had the fan slightly offset. It is quite strange since as you mentioned the card ran at stupidly high temps 90+ iirc so i thought the manufacturer would have had a better quality control system. Anyways thanks for putting my mind to rest, cheers guys.

I still have that exact card. I got mine when they first came out and mine has the bigger and heavier double slot cooler like the ultra had.

Still gets some use as a backup card, only problem with it is the coolers that heavy over the years its caused the PCB to bend slightly

Couldnt afford one at the time, i had (and still have) a 6600GT and i still have the same motherboard you have in that pic sitting in a box and brand new spare as well lol

Its the asus A8N sli-premium, how can you have one of those sitting in a box unused  It was an amazing motherboard back in the day and coupled along with the £200 i spent on 2gb of OCZ platinum (biggest waste of £200 ever) i still use it as my main gaming rig.

I have the A8N-SLI regular which the chipset fans all failed on. Of course it failed on mine and has had a Zalman heatsink on there for some years. Other than that a great board. :p I still use it in one of my servers.

I had two of theese very same leadtek cards in sli for a while, both eventually died within the space of the week. Cant remember if the fan was off centre or not on both.

Wow I have the same mobo and also a 6800GT! I was 'lucky' enough to get hold of one of the MSI 6800GTs that had the wrong chip on it with only 3/4 of the pipelines or whatever it was. Still my current system, in fact, so I'm hoping for a reasonable performance increase when i upgrade to i5/4890:)
