Personally, i emphatically loathe 'close up' magic. 'Magicians' are essentially *****, who deceive and expect to be praised and rewarded. Oh well done, that card was there, and now its there, arent you clever, here, have a grenade.
There is this one card trick I can do where you 'spell' out the name of the err .. victim(?)s card (i.e. 15 cards for five of diamonds) and then the next card pulled off the deck is the victims card.
I can muscle-read on a very basic level, i.e. if you choose an object somewhere in the room I can find it just by holding your hand. It's an awesome party trick and everyone can do it.
Learn how to handle them. Learn basic sleight of hand moves. Once you know the basics, try watching some close up stuff and see if you can see what moves they used and try to figure the trick out.
Probably not the best way to learn but it worked for me.
I still have my first pack of Bicycles when I started magic. They are horrifying to look at.
