Been getting bored of pc games of late but just bought BF1 and really liking it so far. Only problem is coming from all my youth years of consoles I'm used to pads.

Also I'm used to 'slower' paced games so having had about 2 hours of multiplayer on BF1 I didn't get one kill.

This was with KM though so not sure if I should stick it out or have a go on the pad?

I find remembering which keys to press hard and always looking down to find R or some other letter. Anyone any tips or should I just admit to myself I'm old and crap at these games.

I think it's going to be a case of practice. Also, you might want to look into adjusting mouse sensitivity and FOV settings in BF1, there's a few guides around if you search, it should help with mouse aim no end.

If you have a mouse with extra buttons, you can try mapping a few buttons to it like reload.

For online PC FPS games you will rarely be competitive using pad against KM players, especially as PC games usually have most of the aim functions used on consoles disabled for online play.

BF1 is quite bad as well for having a relatively sprawling set of controls required so a lot more of a crash course than some other online FPS games that have more concise input maps.

Oh defo go with KB+M! I use both and for FPS its much better, you soon get used to it.

Muscle memory works best if you learn slower but correctly, rather than full-speed but learning mistakes. I reckon try a slower paced game. Deus ex MK springs to mind

Definitely stick it out with KB&M, you won't stand a chance against other PC players if you're using a pad.

The only problem is, when you go back to the pad, you'll wonder how you put up with it before :p

KM for all fps games and pad for everything else, I came from years on consoles as well but picked up the kM quite quick, I still have to look down quick sometimes on some games but overall I'm not to bad now, infact I find it harder to use a pad now in fps games after using KM for over a year on pc lol I had a little game on my mates xbox the other week (cod mw3) and couldn't shoot anyone, it felt weird using the pad and I was truly terrible lol

maybe download team fortress 2 from steam, its free and not too fast paced, that's what I played for a while to get used to it, its a great game as well :)

I heard that the better console players disabled the aim assist anyway as it interferes when you have multiple targets and need to prioritise them. KB + mouse is still going to rule in this type of game because of the increase in mobility.

Stick with KB&M, it took me ages too pick it up but now, like syks, I can't use a pad for toffee on shooting games.

I played a lot of FPS single player games to get used to the movement.

Stick with KB&M, it takes time, but works wonders once you're used to it.
Even micro$oft arranged some console v pc users thing years ago & KB&M is just so much more responsive/faster, that console/controller users flat out lost.
I went from clicking/keyboard turning in warcraft to proper keybinds & similarly, the difference, once learnt, is massive.

I had the same dilemma recently and was holding off buying BF1 for same reason.

I went with learning a k and m (and I still am) and it's painful and horrible after so many years of padding, but it is better and I won't go back!

Expect your k/d to take a massive tumble and remember to play tactically as I just assumed with my better aiming I could go out there and sock it to them but nah everyone else has a k and m and is better than you!!!

Stick with it and put in the effort/practice time. You'll get there.

I'm so old I never even had pads when I first started gaming. It was arrow keys for movement and a string of other keys for everything else, even when everyone else was using the mouse. I had to learn proper WASD style KB&M just like you - Today I'm not exactly amazing, but I'm vastly better than the average pad-user. I also prefer mice with many buttons (try a Logitech G700S or a Roccat Tyon), with stuff mapped to the right hand.

In fact, I only recently got an Xbox pad, because they're better for platformers and driving games. I used to use a joystick for those, but my HOTAS has too long a throw for the rapid action stuff.

I preferr pad for more console oriented games, gta and assasins creed spring instantly to mind as theyre basically designed around pads.

Kbm for everything else, although i dont do online fps due to the fact that everyone else is either hacking or better than me

Cheers folks. Reckon it's going to be a long painfull learning curve then. I'll stick to learning on BF1 as I'm enjoying it although I'm pants.

One thing I don't get is a few times an enemy player was in front of me and I emptied my rounds on them but still hit nothing and I got killed. Not sure if it's my aim or what.

My K&M ain't the best either, just a wireless Microsoft one. I play in the living room on the tv so I need wireless.

There could be latency issues in the wireless kmb if it's a cheap set, would go unnoticed unless playing fps, equally it could be local network or server latency, im not sure with bf1 but you used to be able to sort game servers by ping time, choose a fastish one.

Equally learning to aim property with a mouse whilst on the move is a steep learning curve, but it will click eventually, battlefield games can be brutal and are played by a lot of experienced players so don't expect miracles straight away.

Battlefield will be a bit of a baptism of fire, but you'll be forced to learn quick, look around frequently, and aim on the move whilst strafing, circling an enemy whilst keeping your gun aimed at them is a good thing to practice, go straight at them and you'll be toast unless you get lucky.

Pads have thier place for some games, but for FPS, once you get a grip on it, you'll completely run rings around bots and people playing with pads.
