I know someone who is in the market for a learner legal 125 bike to get some experience for a few weeks to a few months to aid in the main bike tests and then sell the 125 and move up.My questions is:

What 125 do you recommend that would not lose much when it comes to sell it a few months after purchase aswell as being reliable/cheap to run ?

How much do you need to spend and where to look online to get a good secondhand 125?

A Yamaha YBR 125 or a Honda CG 125. Great starter bikes and they hold their value very well.

You have autotrader, fleebay, MCN, and pistonheads classifieds.

I'd say all 125's hold their value incredibly well because there is a large market for them. I'd avoid something like the Aprilla RS125 (2 stroke, expensive) because a lot of them are dogs due to being owned by idiots. You should be able to get something very decent for between £1k - £1.5k. You might get lucky and pick up something cheaper too. My first 125 was about £300, took me a year to get it running...

Pretty much any Japanese (or European) 125. The Chinese crap is ridiculously cheap to buy new, so s/h values fall through the floor.

A four stroke engine will be more reliable and cheaper to run than a two stroke, but the majority of 125cc bikes made in the last few years will be four stroke.
