What would be the best way to teach myself more about server and network administration from home?

For example, setting up a managed network at home with user groups and profiles etc? Although i'm studying for a CCNA at the moment I feel i'm missing out on this and i'm interested in getting at least some basic experience.

I have no idea how to stop someone pluggin into a network and using the network resources without having to log in (assuming they are physically able to connect).

Anything people can recommend? Certain books etc?

Cheers guys :)

Well, can't you just only grant people who are authenticated or have a paticular hostname for example onto the network? I know you can do this with active directory.

What I mean is though, if someone with a machine that isn't yours (so it wont be configured to have to log on), will they be required to logon or will it simply just book up as normal?

I know these are pretty stupid questions...
