It has become apparent that I need to drastically improve my Slovak. I've recently started spending a lot more time with my girlfriends family and extended family, and will continue to be doing so regularly (at least in the immediate future).
I do know some words, basic greetings and interractions such as "how are you + response", but I need to expand considerably, so I can converse without having to use the girlfriend as a translator!
Her family know less English than I know Slovak, and are less likely to learn (given their age range).
So, how can you learn any language, quickly, preferably without going on an actual course? I've tried a few peices of software, but in all seriousness they are pathetic. Learning how to say "cat, dog, bird, hello, good, bye bye" is pretty useless! I need some way of learning actual day-to-day words and phrases.
Has anyone learnt Slovak (although I guess Czech or Polish would do in all honesty), and could point me in the right direction? Or does anyone have any general pointers about learning a foreign language?
I must add, that I'm not completely useless at learning a foreign language, my French is certainly good enough to converse, but its mostly holiday talk, rather than speaking to natives in a day-to-day sense.
